Orlando, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz earned a hard fought 5-4 win over Colby Sawyer Tuesday night on day two of its spring break trip down in Florida.
The Hawks (8-2 overall, 7-0 SUNYAC) swept doubles play with
Justine Stanejko and
Loretta Donovan winning, 8-3 at first doubles and
Isabel van der Veen and
Amirah Alston earning an 8-6 win at third doubles.
Onalee Batcheller and
Tatiana Barnett won in an extended match at twos, defeating the Chargers' Isabella Gutierrez and Lily Tria, 8-7.
Barnett earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at fourth singles and Stanejko came away with a victory at ones after her opponent retired in the middle of the second set, helping SUNY New Paltz to the 5-4 win.
"A real tough grinding match saw us come out on top," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "We swept the doubles with all three doubles teams playing solid. The singles saw Colby-Sawyer really attack us, but Tatiana and Justine brought home the two matches we needed to win."
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday at the USTA National Campus, facing Connecticut College at 3 p.m.
