SUNY New Paltz Softball Falls to Farmingdale in Road Doubleheader

Farmingdale, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz dropped both games of a doubleheader to hosting Farmingdale State Wednesday, 5-3 and 9-7, respectively.

The Hawks (9-7 overall) took a one run lead in the top of the first in game one. Rhionna Bianchini was let on after a one-out walk. She advanced to second and then third on a wild pitch and was brought home on an RBI groundout by Emmie Mae Cabrera.

A leadoff double helped the Rams tie the score at 1-1 after the first with SUNY New Paltz re-taking a one-run lead at the top of the second. Juliet Bernstein and Sydney Bonewit got on base on a walk and hit-by-pitch with both moving over on a sacrifice bunt by Isabella Shepherd. Jackie Rometo helped plate a run, forcing an error at second that brought Bernstein home. The Hawks couldn't tack on more though, stranding runners on second and third following a groundout to end the threat.

SUNY New Paltz was shutout in the third and let up four runs in the bottom half of the inning, which proved the difference in the game. Farmingdale led off with a single to center and advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt. A single brought the run home to tie the game at 2-2. An RBI double a batter later gave the Rams the lead before adding two insurance runs in the next at-bat on a two-RBI single to center.

The Hawks earned back a run in the sixth, taking advantage on fielding errors but couldn't generate enough offense to come back from the three-run deficit.

Lindsay Roman pitched all six innings and suffered her first loss of the season. She totaled six strikeouts, no walks and allowed 10 hits and four earned runs on 108 pitches tossed.

Kelly Mamorowski was the only Hawk with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Rometo went 1-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. Bianchini had two walks and a run scored.
Jackie Rometo

SUNY New Paltz got out to a one-run lead after the first in game two thanks to a one-out RBI single by Jillian Shelbourne to plate Rometo who led off with a single. Rometo scored again in the top of the third, coming home on a groundout by Marmorowski. Catie Driscoll then created a 3-0 cushion for the Hawks, coming home on a wild pitch.

However, SUNY New Paltz's lead was erased in the bottom half, as the Rams countered with a four-run inning. A walk to lead off the inning was followed by an error at second a batter later which plated the first run. Another throwing error, this time at short, brought home another run with Farmingdale hitting an RBI double and RBI base hit back-to-back to take a 4-3 lead.

After the Rams added a run in the fourth, the Hawks tied the game at 5-5 to start the fifth. Consecutive walks put two runners on with one out for SUNY New Paltz, as a wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position. Mamorowski brought one run home on a sacrifice flyout with Kelsey O'Brien helping tie the game, forcing a throwing error on a hit to third, allowing Morgan Lanberg to get home.
The Rams re-took the lead in the fifth and added three more in the sixth thanks to an error and passed ball to go up, 9-5 entering the seventh. The Hawks fought back with two runs in the final inning. Shelbourne led off with a walk, but SUNY New Paltz were down to its last out three batters later. A hit-by-pitch kept the inning going with Shepherd loading the bases on a single to right. Bonewit brought two runs across on a two-RBI double to left, plating Shelbourne and Bianchini but the game ended there with the Hawks striking out to end the rally.

Jillian Harrison was given the loss after throwing four innings, giving up just eight hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts and one walk. Shepherd led the way offensively with three hits, followed by Rometo (2-for-3) who finished with two runs and a walk. Shelbourne went 2-for-2 with one run, an RBI and two walks. Cabrera added a run and two walks.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday, taking on St. Joseph's-Long Island in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
