Morrisville, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz suffered a 10-8 loss on the road to SUNY Morrisville Sunday.
The Hawks held the advantage on most statistical categories in the game, including shots (40-34), clear percentage (.916-.791), extra man-goals (3-0) and faceoffs (15-5), but turned the ball over 27 times, which allowed the Mustangs to take the lead.
SUNY New Paltz took an early three-goal advantage to start the game.
Ryan Scully found
Deacon Hill for the game's first score.
Thomas Armetta added on three minutes later off a feed by
John Reese.
Michael Devoe helped in the Hawks' third goal with the long pole getting a check on Morrisville's Dante Patriarco with
Zachary Leung picking up the loose ball and providing his team another offensive opportunity, which led to Reese goal assisted by
Zach Schmidt.
The Mustangs quickly trimmed the deficit to one, scoring two goals in a matter of 45 seconds, winning back-to-back faceoffs to get the score to 3-2 with five minutes to go. Devoe helped stop the run, as he picked up the ground ball off the ensuing faceoff win by
Matt Brignati.
Anthony Senecal capitzlied, ripping a shot for his sixth of the year. Patriarco answered for Morrisville, though, scoring on an unassisted goal with 2:30 left in the first.
SUNY New Paltz was blanked in the third, as the Mustangs put away three unanswered goals to take a 6-4 lead into the break. Reese brought the game within one in the opening minute of the second half off a feed from Armetta, but Morrisville countered with four goals to end the quarter and went ahead, 10-5 entering the fourth.
The Hawks started chipping away at the five-goal deficit with 12 minutes left in the period, capitalizing on an extra-man opportunity following a two-minute penalty by the Mustangs.
James Flanagan fed
Aiden Jones for the man-up goal. Brignati won the ensuing faceoff with Senecal picking up the ground ball leading to an
Ethan Scully goal on another assist by Flanagan with the Hawks still up in the penalty.
Morrisville handed SUNY New Paltz another extra-man opportunity with eight minutes left following a 30-second penalty on Patriarco, as
Ryan Scully found the back of the net off a dish by Armetta with 7:40 to play, cutting the score, 10-8.
However, the rally stopped there as the Hawks fired just one shot in the last seven minutes stalling their offensive output.
Reese and Armetta led the way with three points apiece with Reese pacing the team with two goals on four shots. Devoe totaled four ground balls and a team-leading two caused turnovers defensively, while
Ryan Steinhart finished with eight saves in goal.
SUNY New Paltz is back on the field Wednesday, hosting Mount Saint Mary College on South Turf Field at 3 p.m.
