Cobleskill, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz put an end to a six-game losing streak Wednesday with a dominant win on the road over SUNY Cobleskill, 11-4.
The Hawks came out hot with a four-run first inning to set the tone the rest of the way and took a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before putting the final seal on the win with a five-run eighth.
SUNY New Paltz threw six different pitchers who combined to give up just seven hits and just three earned runs.
Billy Moeller earned the start, but
Liam Ryan was given the win to improve to 1-1 on the year.
Offensively, freshman DH
Christopher Sais led the way with a career-high four hits, finishing 4-for-6 with two runs. Freshman left fielder
Matt Sarni followed, going 2-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a walk. Sophomore transfer
Mike Ascanio went 1-for-1 with a run and four RBI after ripping his first home run of the season.
The top of the first started with a one-out base hit by
Fabian Apicella and was followed by a single and walk by
Dillon Ristano and
Nick Harvey, respectively to load the bases. Ascanio then stepped into the box a batter later and ripped a grand slam to open up the game and give his team a quick 4-0 lead.
SUNY New Paltz added a run in the fourth, as
Michael Boccarossa led off with a base hit to left field.
Nick Harvey brought him home with a two-out double to right to bring the lead to 5-0. Boccarossa helped push the advantage to 6-0, forcing an error at first on a hard grounder that allowed Sais, who led off with a single to left, to score.
The Fighting Tigers got runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning to cut the difference to 6-2 entering the eighth.
Justin Harvey started a high-scoring frame with a base hit before Sais got on with a one-out single to center.
Robert Gregory followed up with a rip to center, which plated both Sais and Harvey to bring the score to 8-2. After a walk by Boccarossa, Sarni scored two on a single to right with a throwing error allowing both Boccarossa and Gregory to reach home, rounding out the offense on the day for both teams.
The Hawks are back in action this weekend as they resume SUNYAC play with a three-game series against SUNY Plattsburgh starting Friday at 3 p.m.
