New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz dropped a doubleheader against visiting Oswego Saturday, 12-0 and 16-11.
After suffering a tough shutout eight-inning loss in game one, the Hawks showed some grit and climbed back in after falling in a 10-0 hole after the top of the first. They earned back two runs in the bottom half, but soon looked at a 15-4 deficit after a four-run third inning by the Lakers.
In the bottom of the fourth, John D'Innocnezo subbed in to pinch hit and started the inning with a leadoff walk. After a single by
Tommy Kreider, D'Innoncezo stole third to get the Hawks runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later a double steal allowed D'Innocenzo to score with
Justin Harvey following with a shot to deep center that scored Kreider and
Mike Ascanio who got on with a walk. Consecutive walks by
Ryan Mackle and
Xavier Zykoff pushed another run across to trim the score to 15-7.

Harvey came through again in the bottom of the sixth, rocketing a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the score to 16-9.
Robert Gregory registered his first career home run, as he ripped a shot over the Loren Campbell Field wall in the bottom of the seventh.
SUNY New Paltz kept the rally alive in the eighth, as Harvey's hot bat continued as he sliced his second extra base hit of the game after leading off with a double. Gregory brought Harvey home on a double two batters later, but the offense stalled there for the Hawks to finalize the 16-11 score.
Harvey led the way offensively, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Kreider followed with three hits, two runs and an RBI. Gregory, who earned the start at right, also went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Ascanio had two hits with three runs scored and a walk.
The Hawks threw four pitchers in game two,
Nick Harvey was handed the loss in just .2 innings pitched after the rough first inning start.
Matt Sarni closed out the last 3.1 innings and had a solid outing, not allowing a hit with just one walk and a career-high six strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday on the road at SUNY Cobleskill before getting back into SUNYAC play with a three-game series against SUNY Plattsburgh.
