Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Alyssa Sciarrone

SUNY New Paltz Men's Lacrosse Falls to Oswego, 10-6

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New Paltz hosted Oswego State Saturday on South Turf Field, where both teams had strong starts in the first quarter, but a 3-0 run by the Lakers in the second proved to get the best of the Hawks ending on a loss of 10-6. SUNY New Paltz dropped to 1-2 in the SUNYAC and 5-6 overall.

Starting with a face-off between Oswego Logan Prescott and SUNY New Paltz Quinn Tucker, the Lakers took possession of the ball with three back-to-back attempts to score before a turnover by the Hawks. For Tucker, this was his first starting game at the faceoff.

The first goal of the game went to Oswego in the first quarter by Liam Sexton assisted by Jack Delany, followed by another goal by Corey O'Connor. The Hawks responded with three consecutive goals in a two-minute span, two were made by Thomas Armetta and one by Ethan Scully. After a 30-second penalty called on Armetta with two minutes left in the quarter, the Lakers squeezed in a final goal tying things up.

The second quarter began similarly with the first goal going to the Lakers. However, the Hawks did not come back with the same level of energy as they did in the first. The Lakers displayed a strong defense, and with a one-minute penalty called on Patrick Harnaga and two more goals for the Lakers by O'Connor, the Hawks fell behind 6-3.

Starting the second half, SUNY New Paltz goalie Ryan Steinhart continuously saved the ball, preventing the Lakers from scoring. Hawks John Reese, assisted by Colin Cleary, made the first goal five minutes into the period. The Lakers responded with yet another goal by O'Connor and a final score by Gavin Elston bringing the game to 8-4.

The final quarter began with an immediate goal by Laker Jason Dongelewic. The Hawks gave their best effort with multiple attempts made but the Lakers defended their lead. Ryan Scully, assisted by his brother Ethan Scully, brought the score to 9-5 at the halfway mark. Oswego's O'Connor then made their final goal of the game bring them into double digits 10-5. The ball changed possession a few more times before the Hawks made their final goal as well by Aiden Jones, assisted by Reese, bringing the final score to 10-6 with three and a half minutes left of playtime.

Armetta led the team offensively with two goals, two ground balls and one turnover.

SUNY New Paltz returns to South Turf Field Saturday, April 22 hosting SUNY Potsdam at.1 p.m.
