SUNY New Paltz Softball Sweeps Doubleheader over Oswego

Hawks Improve to 7-1 in the SUNYAC

Oswego, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz closed out their first SUNYAC road weekend with another sweep Saturday, defeating Oswego, 1-0 in extra innings and 9-0 in six innings.

The Hawks improved to 7-1 in the conference and 16-10 overall, sliding atop the conference standings after a dominant weekend where they swept SUNY Cortland Friday for the first time since 1994 and then came back to take care of the Lakers with the two having a strong pitcher's duel in game one featuring SUNY New Paltz ace Lindsay Roman and Oswego's Fiona Higgins.

Game one went scoreless through seven innings with Roman allowing just four hits and a walk with seven strikeouts, while Higgins gave up just five hits and the lone run scored in the top of the eighth. Juliet Bernstein got the rally started with a one-out single to right with Lauren Serrao moving her over on a groundout, setting the table for Rhionna Bianchini with the junior delivering in the clutch on a two-out RBI double to plate the go-ahead run in Bernstein.

Roman closed out the bottom half, getting a flyout before allowing one on in the next at-bat, but silenced any doubt of a win as she popped up the next batting and fanned the next to earn her league-leading 11th win and eighth complete game of the year.

Bianchini was the offensive catalyst, as she registered two of her team's five hits on the day — both doubles — including the game winner, finishing 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot.
Sydney Bonewit

Sydney Waldon pitched game two and had another strong outing for her second-straight win, throwing five innings while giving up just two hits in a shutout with six strikeouts.

The Hawks gave Waldon a four-run cushion at the top of the first with Jackie Rometo getting the inning started on a one-out walk and put herself on third after two straight stolen bases. Jillian Shelbourne brought her home on the following at-bat with a double to left. Jaycee Filancia got on with a single with Sydney Bonewit smacking a two RBI triple to bring the lead to 3-0. Bernstein capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to plate Bonewit.

Bernstein doubled in the top of the fifth to bring Filancia and Shelbourne home, pushing the score to 6-0. SUNY New Paltz ended the game in the sixth after scoring three more to run rule the Lakers.

Bonweit finished 2-for-2 with a run, three RBI and a walk. Bernstein hit 2-for-3 with three RBI with Filancia going 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI. Shelbourne also finished 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday when it travels to St. Joseph's-Long Island for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. before getting back into SUNYAC play Saturday for two games at Oneonta starting at 1 p.m.
