Patchogue, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz extended its winning streak to eight after collecting a doubleheader sweep of St. Joseph's-Long Island Wednesday, 12-2 and 8-5, respectively.
Lindsay Roman and
Erin Barno combined for a four hit gem that helped the Hawks to a dominant 10-run, five-inning win in game one. Roman earned the win to improve to 12-2 on the year, as she gave up just a hit with four strikeouts on 10 batters faced.
The Hawks put three runs on the board in the first with errors by the Golden Eagles aiding in the 3-0 lead.
Jackie Rometo doubled in the second to plate three runs in the second to bring the score to 6-0 after the second.
Jillian Shelbourne hit an RBI groundout in the third, followed with a two RBI shot to center from
Jaycee Filancia to bring the lead to 10-0 entering the fourth.
SUNY New Paltz scored two more in the fourth with St. Joseph's-LI adding two in the top of the fifth before the game ended before the bottom half.
Rometo led the way offensively, going 1-for-2 with three runs, three RBI and a walk.
Sydney Bonewit hit 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Filancia finished 1-for-3 with a run and four RBI.
Sydney Waldon earned the win in game two, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs with one walk and eight strikeouts.
Jillian Harrison came in to close out the win in the final 2.1 innings, yielding just three hits and no earned runs with three strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz broke the 2-2 stalemate with a run in the fourth, as
Juliet Bernstein scored on a throwing error. The Hawks put up three in the following inning, started on a Shelbourne base hit to right that brought Rometo home. Bernstein then doubled to right center, scoring Bonewit and
Nicole Greco, who ran for Shelbourne, pushing SUNY New Paltz ahead, 6-2.
The Golden Eagles answered with two runs in the bottom half, but the Hawks added two insurance runs to start the sixth.
Kelsey O'Brien got the inning started with a single, followed by a Rometo hit-by-pitch. Filancia hit into a fielder's choice that allowed O'Brien to touch home with Bonewit rounding out the offense on a sacrifice fly.
Bernstein led the offense in game two, finishing 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Rometo went 2-for-3 with two runs, while Shelbourne hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and
Isabella Shepherd finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and walk. Bonewit hit 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI.
SUNY New Paltz is back on the road Saturday for a SUNYAC doubleheader against SUNY Oneonta starting at 1 p.m.
