SUNY New Paltz Softball Shutout Baruch in Doubleheader Sweep

Hawks Secure Program Record 12th-Straight Win

New Paltz, NY —The State University of New York at New Paltz improved its winning streak to a program record 12-straight after sweeping Baruch College, 4-0 and 9-0, respectively Tuesday on Mary Gray Dean Field.
 
The Hawks shutout the visiting Bearcats in both games, yielding just seven hits combined in the two games with SUNY New Paltz improving to 22-10 on the year.
 
Lindsay Roman earned the game one win and bumped her record to 13-2 after pitching five innings, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts. Jillian Harrison pitched the last two innings and struck out three with one walk.
 
Emmie Mae Cabrera led off the third with a bloop single to center and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rhionna Bianchini. After Jackie Rometo was hit by a pitch, Sydney Boenwit brought in Cabrera on a hard hit to third. Jillian Shelbourne plated another run on a single through the middle to bring the lead to 2-0.
 
Lauren Serrao kept the fourth inning alive on a two-out single that stayed just inside the third base line. She then put herself in scoring position with a stolen base before Bianchini ripped a double to left to score Serrao. Rometo added a double, scoring Bianchini to cap the offense in the game.
 
Shelbourne and Serrao each had two hits to lead the way for the Hawks. Shelbourne finished 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Serrao went 2-for-3 with a run.
 
 
SUNY New Paltz teed off against Baruch's number two pitcher with Sydney Waldon having a two-hit four-inning standout performance with four strikeouts to secure her seventh win on the season. Harrison threw the last inning and totaled a strikeout with two ground outs.
 
The Hawks got their offense going in the bottom of the first. Bianchini was hit to lead off then stole second to put herself in scoring position. Rometo smashed a stand-up triple to get the first run in. Following a walk and stolen base by Bonewit. Juliet Bernstein pushed Rometo home on a base hit to center. A passed ball plated another run before Kelsey O'Brien split the left side of the infield, scoring Jaycee Filancia to extend SUNY New Paltz's lead to 4-0.
 
Serrao led off with a base hit in the bottom of the second and after stealing second, and then third, Rometo created a 5-0 cushion with a RBI single to left, bringing home Serrao.
   
The Hawks then put the game away in the fourth with another four-run inning. Kelly Marmorowski singled to left to start the frame before Isabella Shepherd hit a triple to bring her home. Serrao continued her hot day with another base hit to bring Shepherd home, resulting in a pitching change for the Bearcats. SUNY New Paltz continued to pile on with a double by Bianchini, which scored Serrao. Rometo then registered an RBI base hit to left to bring Bianchini home, rounding out the offensive output on the day.

Bernstein went 2-for-2 with one run, an RBI and two stolen bases, while Serrao hit 2-for-2 with two runs, an RBI and two stolen bases. Bianchini finished 1-for-2 including a double with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base.
 
The pair of victories re-set the program winning streak to 12 games, surpassing the mark reached last season of 10.
 
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Thursday and Friday, taking on Plattsburgh State and SUNY Potsdam, respectively, to close out its final home games of the regular season. Due to pending rain, the Hawks' series against the Cardinals is set to start at 3 p.m. Thursday before they face the Bears beginning at 3 p.m. Friday.
