Purchase, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz lost 4-1 on the road to SUNY Purchase Wednesday.
The Hawks (10-22) left nine batters on base and produced just seven hits as they struggled offensively against the Panthers (15-16).
Purchase went up 3-0 with runs in the first, third and fourth innings, but the Hawks cut the deficit to two in the top of the fifth.
Justin Ortiz got the frame started with a one-out single.
Michael Boccarossa scored Ortiz in the following at-bat, ripping a double to right to bring the score to 3-1. SUNY New Paltz couldn't pile on though, striking out and flying out to end the inning and standing Boccarossa on second.
Bobby Ramsey earned the start for the Hawks and pitched three innings, allowing two earned runs with two strikeouts.
James Trink came in to pitch three innings and gave up just a hit and one earned run with a walk and five strikeouts.
Matt Sarni threw the last two innings, yielding two hits and one earned run with one walk and two strikeouts.
Xavier Zykoff was the only Hawk to produce two hits, going 2-for-4 on the day. Ortiz had a hit, run scored and a stolen base. Boccorssa recorded a double, RBI and walk with
Dillon Ristano also adding an extra base hit.
SUNY New Paltz returns to the field this weekend with a three-game road SUNYAC series against Fredonia State starting Friday at 10 a.m.
