Season Comes to an End in SUNYAC Quarterfinal for SUNY New Paltz Women's Lacrosse

Hawks Fall to No. 4 Brockport 11-7 in Quarterfinal Round

Brockport, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz fell, 11-7 Saturday in the quarterfinal round of the SUNYAC Tournament to No. 4 seeded Brockport.

The Hawks end a historic season where they won the most games in program history, finishing 9-7 overall with a 5-4 conference mark. It was also the first time ever SUNY New Paltz made back-to-back SUNYAC playoff appearances, as they earned their highest seed ever, slotted at the fifth spot to earn a re-match against the Golden Eagles who knocked them out of playoff contention a season ago.

Kaitlyn Shaw opened up a prolific day with the game's first goal five minutes into the first quarter. The score was stemmed by a defensive stand on the other end, as the Hawks defense batted down a pass force fed in the middle with Cayci Hill coming up with the ground ball.

Shannon Brosnan was given a yellow card after accidental contact to the head on an attempted check and the Golden Eagles took advantage with a man-up goal to knot the score. They added another shortly after on a drive to cage by Cassidy Burnash. SUNY New Paltz continued playing tough defense on long possessions but couldn't come up with a drive stealing ground ball and allowed Brockport extra chances at goal. On the hosts third goal of the game, they again forced a tough pass inside, but the loose ball was kicked up then quick-sticked in the back of the net by the Golden Eagles who extended the lead to 3-1, which soon turned into 4-1 after scoring on their next offensive set after winning the ensuing draw.

Morgan Atwater cut the Brockport lead in half four minutes into the second quarter on a goal assisted by Brosnan. The two teams traded goals in the following two minutes before the Hawks came back to tie with two minutes to go in the half.

Brockport was in the penalty after having too many men on the field with the Hawks taking advantage with a man-up goal from Shaw. Shaw picked up the ensuing draw control and SUNY New Paltz worked through its set with Brosnan feeding Shaw on a cut to tie the game at 5-5. As time ticked down on the half, the Golden Eagles made the most of the second remaining as Alayna Foos worked some space to fire a shot that found the back of the net with just three seconds left to give her team a 6-5 lead at the break.

SUNY New Paltz struggled getting quality possessions in the second half and in turn, Brockport went on a 4-0 run before Shaw put an end to the stretch with a goal midway through the fourth quarter, which trimmed the Golden Eagles lead to 10-6.

The Hawks couldn't climb out of the deficit with each team adding a score to end the game, resulting in the 11-7 outcome.

Shaw, like she had been all season, was the catalyst. She scored six of her team's seven goals and added one caused turnover and a team-leading five draw controls. Her six goals helped her set a new program record for single-season goals with 52, surpassing the mark she set herself last season of 50 despite playing one less game in 2023.

Brosnan totaled three assists, a ground ball and two draw controls, while Gillis chipped in with two assists and a ground ball. Gabriella Tommaso had solid day in goal for SUNY New Paltz, finishing with 10 saves. The freshman ends her first season with the Hawks notching 102 stops for a 9.15 goals-against-average with the latter setting a new program single-season record.

The team as a whole had program best totals of goals-against-average and caused turnovers with the Hawks ranking fifth and fourth-best in the SUNYAC, respectively.
