Buffalo State, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz improved to 2-0 in SUNYAC play with a 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-18, 25-14) of Buffalo State Saturday.
The Hawks (12-5 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC) held a 24-21 lead in the first, but a 3-0 run at set point allowed the Bengals back in the game. An attacking error ended the stretch, but Buffalo State quickly sided out to tie the score at 25-25. Another attacking error pushed SUNY New Paltz back to set point with the Hawks securing the 1-0 lead on a bad set by the Bengals.
A 6-0 run early in the second allowed the Hawks to stay in front with a 9-2 advantage. Buffalo State came back to get within two at 13-11, but a kill by
Mackenzie Williams brought the momentum back toward the visitors as they rolled to a 20-15 lead before going on a 5-1 run at 20-17 to earn the second set victory.
SUNY New Paltz got out to an 18-12 advantage in the third thanks to kills by Williams and
Lexi Stragalas. An attacking error ended a 3-0 run, but the Hawks countered with six-straight points to get to set point.
Jamie Albrecht put an end to the match with a kill off an assist by
Cate DiGiacomo to win the set, 25-14.
Williams and Albrecht led the team offensively with 11 kills apiece with Williams registering a block, an ace and 10 digs, while Albrecht totaled one block and five dig. DiGiacomo registered a game-high 25 assists, while
Melanie Podstupka had a game-high 14 digs.
The Hawks are back on the floor Friday and Saturday, as they host Brockport and Geneseo in the Hawk Center at 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
