Harris Scores Hat Trick as SUNY New Paltz Men's Soccer Rolls Past Saint Elizabeth 4-0

Hawks Claim Drew Fall Festival Tournament Title

Madison, NJ — The State University of New Paltz came out on top Sunday against Saint Elizabeth University. The Hawks claimed a 4-0 victory, shutting out the Eagles and earning the Drew Fall Festival Tournament title after leaving the weekend, 2-0.

"We started off well today with good execution on our first corner to make it a 1-0 game early," said Hawks coach Kyle Clancy. "We mixed in a press and were able to win the ball back often with good organization and energy."

Owen McGarrity put one in the back of the net for SUNY New Paltz within the first two minutes of play, assisted by Joseph DiPreta. Thirty minutes later, Yare Harris headed in his first goal as a Hawk to give his team a 2-0 lead and added one more in 41st minute to give his team a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

The Eagles could not recover after the half, and allowed two more goals, both scored by Harris who capped a career day, becoming the first Hawk to earn a hattrick since Kevin Doorley did so in a win over Potsdam in 2018. He was named the offensive MVP of the tournament.

SUNY New Paltz dominated throughout, out-shooting Saint Elizabeth, 18-1, and did not allow any shots on target. Thomas O'Neill, Colin Brant and David Acker all registered assists on Harris' goals. Christian Micheli earned the start, playing 80-plus minutes before Joe Washington got his first collegiate appearance in net. Micheli was named defensive MVP after helping in the shutout.

"A lot of the first half was played in their end and we created plenty of good chances with Yare scoring two good goals with assists from Colin Brant and TO," Clancy continued. "We were in control all half but started the second half slow and put ourselves under a little pressure. But we got another good lift from the bench in the second half and were able to grab a fourth, with Yare scoring the first hattrick sine Kevin Doorley… after that, the game was in control, and we saw contributions from every player."

The Hawks will look to improve to 3-0 in their home opener Wednesday, hosting Lehman College at 5 p.m. on South Turf Field.
