Plattsburgh, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz winning streak stalled at four Wednesday falling on the road to Plattsburgh, 1-0.
The Hawks suffered their first SUNYAC loss of the season with the defeat, dropping to 8-5-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference, while the Cardinals improved to 8-2-3 and 3-2-1, respectively.
The game was at a scoreless stalemate until the 84th minute when Plattsburgh took advantage of a late corner kick opportunity with Brian Coughlan getting on the end for his fourth of the year. SUNY New Paltz didn't test the net for the remainder of the 15 minutes and suffered its first defeat since Sept. 11.
The Hawks have given up just 11 goals all year, but of the 11, five took place in the 80th minute or later this season, including Wednesday.
Both teams had chances on frame early with the visitors holding the advantage in shots with four versus three for Plattsburgh in the first half. The Cardinals controlled most of the second period, however, tallying seven attempts while SUNY New Paltz had four, while the hosts totaled five of its seven corners in the final 45 minutes. Plattsburgh had the slight advantage in shots on goal, 2-1. Hawks goalie
Christian Micheli made one stop in 90 minutes of play.
Brian Boylan led the Hawks offensively with four shots, one on target, in 63 minutes, followed by
Alex Wyant who had two, as the junior captain played the full 90 minutes.
Ryan Zindler and
Brandon Dhanoolal each had a shot as well.
SUNY New Paltz is back in SUNYAC play Saturday when it hosts Buffalo State for its final regular season weekend home game. The Hawks will honor their graduating seniors prior to the game, while also holding their annual Heinz Ahlmeyer Jr. Game in honor of their 1965 men's soccer alum. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. on South Turf Field.
