New Paltz, NY — In its seventh straight SUNYAC victory, the State University of New York New Paltz defeated the Oneonta Red Dragons to secure a top two seed for postseason SUNYAC play.
"We were able to secure a semifinal spot in the SUNYAC tournament, and there is no group more deserving," said Hawks senior captain
Rachel Eisert. "We are so excited to continue pushing through the end of conference play, and to keep on preparing for playoffs."
In yet another dominant showing, the Hawks didn't let the Red Dragons take any advantage and kept Oneonta to only three shots on net. SUNY New Paltz, however, couldn't stop its offensive crusade, and put up 24 shots total.
After three early shot attempts from the Hawks, forward
Gaby Treble connected in the 12th minute, when she found space in the middle of the box and struck a low shot past the Oneonta keeper.
"Scoring is always a great feeling," Treble said. "But a better feeling is knowing that goals come from the entire team and a high work ethic from so many players that leads up to that moment in front of goal."
Not long after, Eisert followed Treble with another goal. In the 21st minute, Eisert drilled in a shot off a corner kick to elevate the SUNY New Paltz's lead to 2-0.
"I was really excited to find the back of the net today," Eisert said. "Especially off of a corner, which we haven't converted on in a few games."
The goal not only impacted the scoreboard, but it was the last goal Eisert needed to become the new program single season goal record holder, as the senior reached 13 goals on the season.
But she wouldn't be alone at the top of the record book for long.
In the second half, the Hawks looked to add upon their already comfortable lead and 16 minutes in they found the back of the net — and once again, the goal came from Treble. After earning SUNY New Paltz's third of the match, Treble also reached 13 goals on the season, as she joined Eisert in making program history.
Despite most of the half remaining, neither team could put another goal in and the match ended with SUNY New Paltz victorious, 3-0. Treble led the Hawks with two goals scored and Eisert followed with one.
Maddie Franklin didn't see much action in net, but the senior recorded one save on the day. However, more players had an impact on the field than the stat line showed.
"Our midfield had a stand out game today, especially [Alexis] DeLeo, who was able to dictate play in between the lines and set her teammates up for success all around the field," Eisert saod. "
Laney Schmitz was a huge ball winner for us today as well."
The Hawks conclude their regular season schedule Saturday on South Turf Field as they host the Oswego Lakers for SUNY New Paltz's Breast Cancer Awareness match.
"We have a confidence going into Oswego that lights a fire under us while also keeping us humble," Treble said. "We're eager to finish out the season and continue to get better while staying true to ourselves."
Kickoff against the Lakers starts at noon.
