Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament is officially set with the Hawks securing a spot in the six-team single elimination championship for the fourth straight season.
SUNY New Paltz ended the regular season at 9-7-1 overall and 5-3-1 in the conference, good enough to secure the No. 5 seed. They'll head to SUNY Plattsburgh Saturday for the quarterfinal round, as a potential semifinal matchup against No. 1 Buffalo State looms.
First, the Hawks need to defeat the Cardinals who ended the year 11-2-3 overall and 6-2-1 in the SUNYAC. They were one of the three league opponents to defeat SUNY New Paltz during the regular season.
In the first matchup, Plattsburgh shut out the Hawks at the Field House Complex on the campus of SUNY Plattsburgh. Neither team generated many chances on goal with the hosting Cardinals totaling two shots on goal, while SUNY New Paltz had one. The game was scoreless until the 84th minute when Plattsburgh took advantage of a late corner.
The two teams reunite in the same spot just a mere 17 days later with the Hawks looking to avenge that loss and earn its first SUNYAC Tournament win since 2012.
On the other side of the bracket, No. 6 Oswego (8-4-4, 3-4-2) faces No. 3 Cortland (13-3-4, 6-1-2), the reigning SUNYAC Champions. The winner will face No. 2 SUNY Oneonta (11-3-3, 7-2) — the 2022 SUNYAC Champs — Nov. 6. The winners of the semifinal brackets will play at the highest seed's remaining's home turf Nov. 9. Time TBA.
The quarterfinal round begins Saturday. Kickoff between the Cardinals and Hawks is scheduled at 1 p.m.
