New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz were in a scoreless stalemate with hosting Fredonia Saturday until a penalty was given to the Hawks in the 85th minute. Captain
Alex Wyant stepped up to the spot and put away the go-ahead goal to secure the 1-0 win for his club.
The Hawks improved to 6-4-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the SUNYAC to hold onto second place in the conference standings after securing the three points on the day.
They created more chances than the Blue Devils throughout the game, finishing with 16 shots, seven of which were on target, while Fredonia had nine looks but just one on frame. Each team garnered five corners.
The match was tightly contested with four cards given, two for each team. Wyant was handed a yellow in the 82nd just before Liam Walsh committed a foul in his own box resulting in a penalty kick opportunity for the Hawks captain three minutes later. Wyant walked up and calmly put the chance away, which is all SUNY New Paltz needed to clinch the win.
Wyant played all 90 minutes and totaled a game-high four shots, three on target with the game-winner.
Brandon Dhanoolal followed with three shots, two on target in 52 minutes, followed by center back
Owen McGarrity with two shot attempts in a full 90 minutes played.
Christian Micheli made one stop in goal for the Hawks in the win.
SUNY New Paltz returns home Wednesday to resume SUNYAC play, hosting SUNY Morrisville at 4 p.m. on South Turf Field.
