Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz secured its fourth-straight win while improving to 2-0 in conference play after earning a 5-1 win over hosting Oneonta Saturday.
The Hawks (10-1 overall, 2-0 SUNYAC) registered 10 shots in the first quarter but didn't break the stalemate until midway through the second thanks to freshman
Ashley McGough scoring off an assist by
Rachel Tama in the 25th minute. The score was what SUNY New Paltz needed to ignite its offense, as Tama added another less than a minute later with McGough returning the favor on a feed to Tama for the goal.
Oneonta earned a penalty corner three minutes into the second half with
Gail Comiskey coming up with the stop. The Hawks defense cleared, leading to a goal by
Miranda Britton with
Amanda Quenneville tallying the assist on the play to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Red Dragons answered in the 37th minute with a score, but SUNY New Paltz defense anchored in and allowed just four shots for the remainder of the game.
Tama then continued her prolific campaign as she added two more insurance goals for the Hawks to secure the 5-1 win for her team. She led all players with 11 shots, all 11 of which were on target, registering three goals and an assist. Britton followed with seven shots, six on target, with a score, while McGough's only shot went in as she added an assist. Comiskey finished with five saves in the win.
SUNY New Paltz returns home Wednesday, taking on FDU-Florham in a non-conference matchup on North Turf Field at 4 p.m.
