SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Loses 1-0 to Vassar

Hawks go scoreless in regular season finale

Poughkeepsie, NY — For just the second time all season, the State University of New York New Paltz was held scoreless.

The difference was just one in the Hawks' regular season finale Friday night, taking on cross-river rival Vassar at Weinberg Field. The game was at a scoreless stalemate until the hosting Brewers found the back of the net in the 54th minute to decide the match with SUNY New Paltz suffering a 1-0 loss to drop its record to 13-5 overall entering postseason play.

The game was fairly even through three quarters with Vassar holding the slight advantage in shots in the first half, 8-4. Gail Comiskey needed to make six saves in the opening 30 minutes to preserve the shutout with the Hawks defense holding off three Brewers corners within the first two periods.

SUNY New Paltz was the dominant team however to open up the second half, totaling 11 shots with seven corners produced, maintaining possession on its offensive end for the majority of the 15 minutes of action.

The Hawks earned a corner immediately out of the second half whistle with Rachel Tama firing a shot off the set play, which was saved by Brewers goalie Grace Wiley. Hannah Ackerman found the loose ball and tried shoving an attempt in the back of cage, but again Wiley was there for the stop. SUNY New Paltz was relentless and didn't' allow Vassar to clear its zone, forcing consecutive corners in the matter of three minutes.

The Brewers were hit with back-to-back green cards, giving the Hawks a two-man advantage that resulted in four corners in the span, but Vassar dug in and held onto the 0-0 tie with SUNY New Paltz firing five shots, four of which went wide to end the quarter.

The Hawks sustained the momentum to start the fourth, generating two more corners within the first five minutes of the period. Tama and Quenneville saw looks on net, but the first was saved by Wiley with the second going wide of goal.

Vassar pressed on and earned its opportunity late in the quarter. Generating three straight corners, the Brewers were awarded a stroke following a save by Comiskey. The hosts converted with less than six minutes left and held on from there to earn their fourth win of the season.

Tama led the team with nine shots, four of which were on goal. Britton followed with five shots with Ackerman and Quenneville each having two. Comiskey finished with seven stops in a full 60 minutes of action.

SUNY New Paltz starts a new season Wednesday, as it enters postseason play. The Hawks claimed the second seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will face No. 3 Oneonta in the semifinal round Wednesday on North Turf Field at 2 p.m.
