Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced its most recent rankings in the conference's Commissioner's Cup race with the Hawks landing second among their 10 league colleagues.
With a total average of eight points, SUNY New Paltz landed second only behind leader SUNY Cortland (9.71). Oneonta followed in third with 7.29 points with Buffalo State (6.25), Oswego (6.0), Fredonia (5.65), Plattsburgh (4.65), Morrisville (4.08), Potsdam (3.0) and Canton (1.40) rounding out standings.
The Commissioner's Cup is based on a point system determined by the 22 different conference sports in all three seasons. A 10-point system is used for each sport with the first-place team getting 10 points, second getting nine and so on. A team's regular season finish will be added to their postseason finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has.
SUNY New Paltz has 15 SUNYAC sponsored sports, which includes men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, field hockey and men's and women's cross country for the fall, along with women's tennis who completed their SUNYAC regular season schedule in the final with postseason being played in the spring.
Every team made the postseason this fall for the Hawks, including SUNYAC Finals appearances for women's soccer and field hockey, while both men's soccer and women's volleyball earned a semifinal berth. Field Hockey fell to Cortland, 2-1 in the championship game, while women's soccer defeated the Red Dragons to hoist a conference title for the first time in more than a decade.
Meanwhile, the men's and women's cross country teams had a productive SUNYAC Championship meet, finishing fourth and third overall, respectively, while for the seventh-straight year women's tennis claimed the top seed heading into the postseason tournament after going undefeated in league play this past fall.
