SUNY New Paltz Men's Lacrosse Earns 17-4 Win Over Mount Saint Vincent

Riverdale, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz won its second straight game Saturday as it hit the road to face Mount Saint Vincent College.

The Hawks improved to 2-3 overall after enjoying their best offensive output of the season in the 17-4 rout.

Seven different players registered at least a point for SUNY New Paltz with John Reese, Ryan Scully and James Flanagan leading the way with six points apiece on four goals and two assists. Ethan Scully followed with three goals, while Anthony Senecal pitched in with a goal and an assist.

"I think the third quarter against Mount Saint Mary's opened our eyes that we are better as a crew of six than a 1-on-1 team," said SUNY New Paltz coach Dylan Neisler. "It also opened our eyes that not every time you touch the ball it has to turn into a goal or an assist. If I could correlate it to something it would be baseball. Not always swinging for the fences. Sometimes a base hit the other way is just as good. That's what we're learning that singles can turn into goals just as well as home run swings can."

The Hawks took a 9-2 lead into halftime after getting out to an 8-1 advantage following six unanswered goals. After Mt. Saint Vincent cut into the deficit midway through the second quarter, Ryan Scully re-upped the seven-point advantage with three minutes to go in the half breaking a near six-minute offensive drought by both teams with Flanagan picking up the assist on the man-up goal.

SUNY New Paltz's offense continued to roll in the second half with Flanagan scoring to re-ignite the offense with 12 minutes to go in the period. Thomas Armetta fed Reese two minutes later before Reese added on to fatten the cushion to 190, finishing on a feed from Ryan Scully. The Dolphins responded with a goal with two minutes left, but Ryan Scully scored with time expiring in the period to re-up the lead at 14-3 entering the fourth.

Ethan Scully, Reese and Ryan Scully capped the scoring for the Hawks to solidify the team's second-straight win.

SUNY New Paltz out-shot the hosts, 46-39 with Mt. Saint Vincent holding the advantage on turnovers (19-18), ground balls (27-39) and faceoffs (9-13). Zachary Leung led the team defensively with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Ryan Steinhart earned the win in goal, finishing with 17 saves in 45 minutes of action. Dan Clark played the final 15 minutes and made two stops.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, hosting SUNY Delhi on South Turf Field at 3 p.m.
