Northampton, MA — The State University of New York at New Paltz split its road doubleheader Wednesday against Smith College, winning game one, 5-1 before falling in game two, 3-2 in five innings played.
Lindsay Roman improved to 2-1 on the year after leading the Hawks to a victory in the first game of the series. She pitched a complete seven innings, gave up just three hits and no earned runs with two walks and a season-high seven strikeouts.
Kelly Marmorowski was the offensive catalyst in the game, as the DP finished 2-for-4, both doubles, and an RBI.
Jaycee Filancia followed with a two-RBI double, which came in the seventh inning, a run scored and a stolen base.
Nicole Greco took over right field duties in the fourth and knocked an RBI double in the seventh to help solidify the 5-1 win.
Jillian Shelbourne registered an RBI on a fielder's choice to break the scoreless stalemate in the fifth, plating
Lauren Serrao. After the Pioneers tied the score following an error in left in the sixth, the Hawks responded in the seventh thanks to extra base hits from Filancia, Marmorowski and Greco.
Smith took the initial lead in game two in the bottom of the first, but SUNY New Paltz answered with two runs in the third to take the lead. Filancia stayed hot at the plate and ripped another double, this time out to left, which platted
Kelsey O'Brien and Serrao to push the Hawks ahead, 2-1.
The Pioneers countered with two runs in the bottom half, as walks came back to bite the visitors in the inning. After consecutive one-out walks, Smith hit an RBI double to tie the score. With runners in scoring position, a wild pitch platted the go-ahead run. Both teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth with neither team registering a hit. The game was then cut short with daylight winding down resulting in SUNY New Paltz's second loss of the season.
