Syracuse, NY — The State University of New York Athletic Conference announced weekly awards Monday with Hawks sophomore outfielder
Kelsey O'Brien named as the SUNYAC Softball Athlete of the Week.

Earning her first weekly honor, O'Brien had a breakout opening weekend for SUNY New Paltz. Inserted in the two-spot in the batting order, O'Brien went 7-for-14 with a team-high six runs, two RBI, a walk and three extra base hits with one double and a triple through four games played.

The Monroe, NY native got the offense started in a 5-3 win over William Peace, hitting a leadoff single in the top of the third before crossing to score the team's first run of the game. With the game tied in the top of the seventh, O'Brien knocked a leadoff double and then was later hit in as the game's go-ahead run to help in the two-run win. She went 2-for-4 with two runs in the victory, before going 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in a 9-1 victory over Randolph in the following game. In a 10-1 rout of Oberlin Sunday, O'Brien was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, a walk and a double. Defensively, she totaled seven putouts in the field.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, going on the road to face Smith College for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
