New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz lost a tough 16-14 games at home on South Turf Field Saturday against visiting Manhattanville College, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Hawks drop to 3-4 overall, while the Valiants improved to 4-3. Both teams had trouble taking care of the ball with SUNY New Paltz holding the slight edge in turnovers, 16-18. The biggest difference though, was in penalty time, as the Hawks racked up four minutes of man-down plays throughout the game, but none hurt the most than in a pivotal third quarter where they were given four penalties in the quarter.
Regardless, SUNY New Paltz stayed afloat and even had an opportunity to tie in the final possession of the game after
Quinn Tucker won the ensuing faceoff after
John Reese scored his third of the day to get his team within one. The Hawks couldn't get a shot off as a throw away in front of the net resulted in a fast-break goal for Manhattanville with numbers in transition to solidify the two-goal win.
Anthony Senecal was the offensive catalyst as he finished with a team-high six points on four goals and two assists with eight shots and three ground balls.
Thomas Armetta followed with a goal and three assists with Reese totaling three goals on the day.
Tucker did well at the faceoff X, winning 21-of-33 attempts and leading the team with 13 ground balls. Zacharly Leung had three ground balls and four caused turnovers with fellow senior pole
Rafael Fillyaw also totaling four caused turnovers, while adding a ground ball.

The two teams traded goals to start the day with Manhattanville taking the initial lead with Armetta grabbing the first advantage for his team off a feed from Senecal with three minutes left in the first quarter. The lead was quickly erased to start the second period, as the Valiants opened up with a 3-0 run before
Ryan Scully took advantage of a man-up opportunity with a goal off an assist from younger brother
Ethan Scully.
Tucker won the ensuing faceoff to himself and SUNY New Paltz answered as
Colin Cleary toughed through three defenders to get the ball across and one-handed threw a pass to an open
James Flanagan who whipped a shot top corner for the game-tying goal with nine minutes to go in the half.
Manhattanville maintained the lead with another three-goal unanswered spurt. Reese ended the stretch with three minutes remaining before Cleary added on one minute later. The two teams traded goals to end the half with Senecal finding a buzzer beating goal as time expired in the half to get his team within one.
SUNY New Paltz never led in the third, but tied the score at 9, and 10-all, as it did well to manage through penalty minutes going into the fourth with a slight 11-10 disadvantage. Senecal gave the Hawks their first lead since the first quarter midway through the fourth, but they couldn't sustain the momentum as Manhattanville went on another 3-0 run, which proved as the difference. Reese gave SUNY New Paltz life after scoring on an assist from Flanagan with 30 seconds remaining, but the Hawks couldn't push the game into extra time and instead took their first loss at home.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, hosting SUNY Poly on South Turf Field at 3 p.m. in its last non-conference matchup before entering SUNYAC play over the weekend.
