SUNY New Paltz Men's Lacrosse Falls on the Road 13-11 to Lasell

Newton, MA — The State University of New York at New Paltz traveled to Newton, Massachusetts to play Lasell University Saturday in a tight game throughout. In the first meeting between the two programs, the hosting Lasers bested the Hawks, 13-11.

Thomas Armetta and Ryan Scully got SUNY New Paltz out to a 2-0 lead within the first three minutes of the game before Lasell cut into the lead following a faceoff win. The Hawks re-upped the two goal advantage after forcing a turnover on the ride with Ethan Scully capitalizing off an assist from Aiden Jones.

The two teams traded goals with Colin Cleary picking up the ground ball off a faceoff win from Quinn Tucker, resulting in a goal by Deacon Hill from Ryan Scully, but the Lasers cut the score to within one in the last minute of the quarter.

Lasell took its first lead of the game to start the second period at 5-4, but John Reese tied the game at fives after putting away his third of the year. Ethan Scully then took advantage of another Lasers turnover in transition, as he finished off a feed from line mate Anthony Senecal to push his team to a 6-5 lead with just less than two minutes to go in the half. The Lasers immediately answers though, as Matthew Carbone won possession off the draw, drove in and scored to tie the game at 6-6 heading into the break.

Senecal re-gained the lead for the Hawks with 13:35 to go in the third, but the advantage didn't last long with Lasell again scoring off the ensuing faceoff win. Ethan Scully and James Flanagan scored back-to-back goals to push SUNY New Paltz back on top, 9-8 with seven minutes to go with Aiden Jones scoring off an assist by Ryan Scully to bring the cushion to two. Carbone won the ensuing faceoff and the Lasers answered with another goal before period's end to get within one.

The Hawks offense stalled in the fourth quarter with Lasell carrying momentum in front of its home crowd. The Lasers scored three unanswered during a four-minute stretch midway through the fourth that proved as the difference, as they led 12-10 with about seven minutes to go. Armetta got his team within one after ripping a shot that found the back of the net off a feed from Ryan Scully.

SUNY New Paltz had chances to tie, but Lasell goalie Michael Catalano came up with back-to-back saves on shot attempts in the final two minutes with the Lasers holding possession to milk the clock and hold onto the win.

Attempts were fairly even with the Hawks totaling 42 shots to Lasell's 43, but the Lasers had the advantage on the faceoff X, winning 16 of 28 while picking up 31 ground balls to SUNY New Paltz's 20.

Catalano needed to make just 10 stops, while Ryan Steinhart finished with 15 saves for the Hawks. Ryan Scully led the team with six points off a goal and a career-high five assists. Senecal followed with four points (one goal, three assists), while adding two ground balls. Ethan Scully had three goals, while Armetta finished with two goals, two ground balls and a team-leading two caused turnovers.
