Throggs Neck, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz, ventured to the edge of the Bronx Tuesday evening, for its first ever matchup against SUNY Maritime.
The Hawks looked to move past a down second game from Friday's doubleheader against Plattsburgh and succeeded, winning 14-12 in 10 innings over the Privateers.
After a scoreless first,
Michael Boccarossa led off with a base hit. Next batter
Dillon Ristano blasted his second home run of the year to center to give SUNY New Paltz a 2-0 lead. With two on from an error at third and botched double play attempt, it was a perfect opportunity to get an insurance run.
Christopher Sais stepped up, and cashed in a run to make it 3-0. The runs kept coming, as the Hawks scored three more times in the second when
Fabian Apicella scored on a wild pitch. Boccarossa drove in two more as
Tommy Kreider and
Nick Harvey scored, stretching the lead to 6-0.
Dylan Thomasson was on the hill, going for his second win of the season. Thomasson got out of the first inning scoreless, leaving just a runner on. The Privateers wanted to join the fun, and started by loading the bases on two hits and a single. The runners moved up a base on an RBI single to make it a five run lead. Later, a three run home run cut the advantage for the Hawks to one. After a hit by pitch,
Connor Olson took over in his fourth game of the season. He stopped the bleeding, as they moved to the third.
Olson did his job in the third, recording a one, two, three inning. Olson's night was over after a productive outing and
Jason Wall took the mound. Wall, out there for his sixth time of the season, has been a useful piece for SUNY New Paltz but was ready to shake off a tough start against the Cardinals over the weekend. Tuesday's outing was not his best, as he allowed a hit by pitch, a walk, and three hits, giving Maritime a 9-6 lead in the fourth.
Things were quiet until the seventh when
Anthony Pericolosi made contact and got on with a lead-off single. A Boccarossa hit-by-pitch gave SUNY New Paltz a chance to take the lead when Ristano entered the box. The bases would be filled from an error at second base, and the Hawks continued filling the bases.
Ryan Mackle got the job done in a pinch-hitting situation, scoring Boccarossa on a ground out before
Nick Harvey and Kreider each earned an RBI on a walk and single, respectively.
Michael Ascanio capped the threat, as he belted a two-RBI double to bring the lead to 12-9.
In the bottom of the eighth
Matt Sarni took over and tried to ward off a comeback from the Privateers — easier said than done with a Maritime team that was never out of the game. A two-run double off Sarni tied the game at 12.
It was free baseball for everybody, as SUNY New Paltz entered its first extra inning game of the year. Kreider led off and cracked a double. He moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch. Ascanio walked, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Pericolosi thought why not score a run? And did exactly that, hitting a sacrifice fly to put his team up by one. The Hawks were not done as Ristano reached on an error at short, scoring Ascanio, which put SUNY New Paltz up, 14-12.
Robert Gregory, who came on in the ninth, stayed on to close it out. You could not ask for a better inning as he struck out the side and clinched the 14-12 win.
It was a bullpen day for the Hawks, using six pitchers to keep Maritime at bay. Kreider went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Ascanio went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Good plate discipline allowed five batters to have two walks each.
Gregory picked up his first win of the year, going two innings and allowing one hit, no runs, no walks with four strikeouts.
SUNY New Paltz returns home Friday for its second SUNYAC series of the season, playing Fredonia for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
