Orlando, FL — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team was on the road for their annual spring break trip. The Hawks were forced to cancel their first match against Whitworth University due to travel delays from the weekend's winter storm. Despite arriving in Florida late Monday night, the Hawks took the courts today against Augustana College from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. The Hawks fell to the Vikings 4-5 in a tight match with four of the six singles matches requiring a third set to decide the winner.
"A hard-fought close match up unfortunately saw New Paltz on the wrong side of a 4-5 loss. After many weather-related travel issues and arriving at 4am at the hotel this morning the team we're working off 4 hours of sleep.
Our doubles teams started strong with both #1 Justine Stanejko/Loretta Donovan winning a highly contest match 8-6 this was followed up with our #2 Onalee Batcheller / Isabel van der Veen team winning 8-2. #3 Tatiana Barnett/Nina Genzone came close to a clean sweep in doubles but unfortunately, we went down in a very hard-fought match losing 6-8.
With New Paltz needing to win 3 of 6 singles matches we came up a little short with 4 of the single matches going to tie 3rd set breakers. The highlights of our singles matches was at #5 Amirah Alston winning 2 sets to 1 followed by freshman #6 Olivia Kunz also winning by 2 sets to 1.
#2 Onalee Batcheller, #3 Tatiana Barnett & #4 Loretta Donovan all went down in 3rd set tie breakers, all very close matches.," said Coach Rob Bruley.
The Hawks will continue their spring break series tomorrow, March 27, against St. Olaf College in Orlando, FL.
