New Paltz, NY — The Hawks are rolling.
The State University of New York at New Paltz swept its sixth-straight SUNYAC series Friday after blanking visiting Buffalo State, 2-0 and 6-0, respectively, to extend its winning streak to a program record 17th-straight game.
The Hawks (26-4 overall, 12-0 SUNYAC) surpassed last year's record of 16 straight wins in a season where they finished 31-13 overall, the most ever. The team has never gone undefeated in conference play, but after another series sweep, they are six games from claiming a spotless SUNYAC regular season record with Fredonia coming in Saturday for their regular season finale.
Backed by another steady day in the circle from SUNY New Paltz's top two arms in
Lindsay Roman and
Sydney Waldon, the duo gave up a combined six hits in two complete game shutout victories.
The Hawks gave Roman early run support after taking the lead in the bottom of the first.
Jaycee Filancia led off the afternoon with a base hit, then stole second to place herself in scoring position.
Kelsey O'Brien then brought her home a batter later on a sacrifice fly, scoring Filancia from third.
Roman maintained the one-run advantage through four more innings with SUNY New Paltz adding one more in the bottom of the fifth.
Lauren Serrao hustled out a base hit with one out before Filancia cracked a ball through the gap at right center with the Bengals having trouble getting the ball in, allowing Serrao to score and boost the advantage to 2-0. Roman then dialed in, as she shut down the side with three-straight swinging strikeouts, two on Buffalo State pinch hitters to end the inning.

The Bengals threatened with a leadoff hit to start the seventh, but Roman stranded the runner with three straight outs, starting with a routine infield pop-up before striking out the next batter and then ending the game with a flyout to center.
Roman improved to 12-3 on the season after allowing three hits with six strikeouts and no walks. Filancia was the catalyst offensively, as the sophomore went 2-for-3, including a double with a run, an RBI and a stolen base.
Jillian Shelbourne also had two hits on the day, while Serrao finished 1-for-2 with a run.
Sydney Waldon took over for the Hawks in game two and picked up her 13th win of the season after tossing a complete game shutout, while giving up just two walks and three hits with seven strikeouts on the day.
The game was scoreless until SUNY New Paltz got its offense started in the bottom of the third.
Emmie Mae Cabrera managed a single through the left side to start the frame with
Kate Hope coming in to pinch run. Following a base hit by Filancia,
Jackie Rometo brought Hope home after muscling a ball to the opposite side with Hope hustling to the plate for the game's first run. The Hawks couldn't pile on though and took just a slight one run lead into the fourth, stranding three runners on.
SUNY New Paltz added on in the fifth. Shelbourne got the offense started as she remained patient at the plate with two outs and earned a walk to keep the inning alive.
Michaela Bridgwood came in to pinch run and was quickly hit in on an RBI double by O'Brien.
Nicole Greco stepped into the batter's box in a pinch-hit situation and the senior did her job, bringing home O'Brien with an RBI single to center to push the advantage to 3-0.
The Hawks put the game away in the seventh with three more insurance runs. Rometo earned an RBI on a single to right before Shelbourne and O'Brien plated runs in back-to-back at-bats to conclude the 6-0 output.
SUNY New Paltz produced 14 hits in game two with nine different players registering a hit, including pinch hitters, Greco and
Ella Sharrock. O'Brien led the way offensively, as she finished 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored and two RBI. Filancia went 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base in the leadoff spot, while Shelbourne added an RBI base hit and a walk.
The Hawks return to Mary Gray Deane Field Saturday afternoon for a doubleheader against Fredonia State in their regular season home finale. The team will honor its seven graduating seniors prior to the game.
