Syracuse, NY — For the second time on the season, the State University of New York at New Paltz swept SUNYAC weekly softball honors with junior
Sydney Waldon and sophomore
Jaycee Filancia named Pitcher and Athlete of the Week.
Waldon earned her second SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week accolade after going a perfect, 3-0 in all three appearances this week highlighted by a near no-hitter against Potsdam Sunday. She was two outs away from securing the program's eighth no-hitter, and first of her career, but gave up two base hits in the bottom of the seventh. However, she anchored down for the win, yielding just the two hits with no earned runs and two walks with 10 strikeouts — her third double-digit strikeout game of the year — in a dominant complete game performance.
Earlier in the week, she helped SUNY New Paltz to a 2-1 win over Oneonta where she delivered seven innings of work for another complete game performance, giving up seven hits, one earned run and one walk with one strikeout. In a 7-2 victory over Plattsburgh Saturday, Waldon tossed five innings, gave up six hits, two earned runs, two walks with five strikeouts. Through the three-game stretch, Waldon pitched a total of 19 innings, giving up just three earned runs and five walks with 16 strikeouts, had a K/7 of 5.89, and miniscule ERA of 1.11 and WHIP of 1.05.
Filancia, meanwhile, was the offensive catalyst for the Hawks as they took three-straight doubleheader SUNYAC series wins to improve to a perfect, 10-0 in conference play. Filancia had a week at the plate, as she went 13-for-23 with five doubles, eight runs, four RBI and five stolen bases, while hitting .565 with a slugging percentage of .783. She led the team in hits, runs, doubles and stolen bases in the stretch while also tying a single-game record with four stolen bases against Potsdam Sunday.

In the series over Oneonta, Filancia went 3-for-7, managing one of the three hits SUNY New Paltz had in the game in a 2-1 win. She showed off her athleticism in the field in the game, as she made two highlight catches at third, one on a leaping grab and another on a laser hit back to her in the hot corner where she turned a double play to earn a quick two outs after the Red Dragons began the inning with a lead-off double. Against Plattsburgh, she was one of two runs scored in a 2-0 win in game one, as she finished with a double and a run scored. She paced the offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with three runs and a double. Her hot bat continued against Potsdam, as she went 6-for-10 in the series with two doubles, combining for four runs, three RBI and a walk.
Filancia finished with a perfect fielding percentage defensively after totaling 14 catches, eight put-outs and six assists.
Filancia is the fourth different Hawk to register a SUNYAC weekly honor this season with the pair registering the fifth and sixth total selections for SUNY New Paltz this year.
The Hawks return to the field for a full slate, starting with a doubleheader at home against Sage before hosting Buffalo State and Fredonia Friday and Saturday on Mary Gray Deane Field, respectively.
