SUNY New Paltz Athletics, Wellness & Recreation Celebrate Division III Week

Hawks hold One Team training, open its new fueling station, hold an Academic Awards Ceremony, and help at annual Special Olympics

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz was buzzing with excitement during the University's 2024 D3 Week. Multiple events were held throughout the week, recognizing Hawks Student Athletes, promoting community-building relations, and celebrating the impact of athletics on the SUNY New Paltz campus and beyond.

Kicking it off on April 3, Director of Athletics, Wellness & Recreation Renee Bostic led a One Team training session in the Hawk Center. This event was open to all student-athletes, nearly 100 being in attendance. It was held to facilitate the development of a positive campus culture, promotion of teamwork, and instillation of leadership skills in student-athletes.

Thursday began with the grand opening of the Hawks Fueling Station, a brand-new student-athlete-exclusive accommodation for busy athletes to grab some nutritional snacks before or after practice and games. President Darrell P. Wheeler, alongside Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representatives, cut the ceremonial ribbon, unveiling the installation located near Elting Pool downstairs of the AWC.

Later that evening, student-athlete's academic success was celebrated at the Academic Awards Ceremony. The exceptional athletes were honored for their hard work in the classroom with 30 announced as new inductees into the Chi Alpha Sigma National Honor Society, a "nonprofit organization that was established to recognize four-year college student-athletes who excel both on and off the field of competition."

Also during the ceremony, 33 student-athletes who achieved a 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2023 semester were honored, being recognized for accomplishing such an impressive academic feat.

The Special Olympics, held in the Hawk Center and Elting Gym on Sunday, wrapped up the week's events. Coordinated by SAAC Community Relations chair Cate DiGiacomo, the gym was full of Special Olympic athletes as well as student-athlete volunteers from SAAC. The event was an overall success, and enjoyable for all involved.

As D3 Week comes to a close, SUNY New Paltz continues to praise and acknowledge the work of student-athletes and athletic staff on the field, in the classroom, and for the greater community.
