SUNY New Paltz Baseball Comeback Falls Short to Ramapo, 11-7

New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz returned home Tuesday, taking on Ramapo College for only the fifth time in its history, and first in seven years.

The Hawks (13-8 overall) looked to make it five straight wins, and five out of their last six. While the hitting continued, the pitching wasn't as reliable as the past two games and they suffered an 11-7 loss despite a valiant comeback.

Jason Wall was on the bump Tuesday, looking for his third win of the year. After a shutdown first inning, the second gave Wall a harder time.

Wall picked up the first out of the inning with a groundout to short. The next three batters lined three straight singles which loaded the bases and allowed a run to score. An error by left fielder Justin Ortiz led to another run to score, which put Ramapo up 2-0. An RBI groundout plated another run for the Roadrunners and gave them a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom half.

The top of the third did not go the way SUNY New Paltz wanted. The Roadrunners got on base right away with a leadoff walk. Next batter socked a single to right which moved the runner to third and put runners on the corners with no outs. Ramapo came home to score on an error to short, which made it 4-0 Roadrunners. Another single to center drove home another run, and moved a runner to third on an error by Michael Ascanio. A fielder's choice by Ramapo, scored another run, but the Hawks recorded the first out of the inning. The seventh run of the game, and fourth of the inning came on an error to first. Wall got the second out with a strikeout swinging. One out away from getting out of the jam, the Roadrunners got a free pass and loaded the bases. Next batter lined a single to left, making it an 8-0 Ramapo lead. That would be all for Wall, as Connor Olson took over. After a stolen base, the Hawks escaped the inning on a fielder's choice.

Anthony Pericolosi got the runs started for the Hawks when he led off the bottom of the fourth with a hit by pitch. A wild pitch moved him to second and a base hit could put SUNY New Paltz on the board. Dillon Ristano walked, and two runners were on for the Hawks. Next batter Justin Harvey cracked a double to left. Periclolosi scored and Ristano advanced to third. A passed ball moved both runners up, with Ristano coming home to score, cutting the Ramapo lead to six.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tommy Kreider led off with a walk. A hit by pitch to Ascanio, and a walk to Pericolosi loaded the bases for SUNY New Paltz. Ramapo went to their bullpen for some help. Michael Boccarossa took advantage of the pitching change and lined a single to center, which allowed two runners to score, and the Hawks inched closer down 8-4. Another run came home when J. Harvey reached on a fielder's choice and Pericolosi came home. An error by the catcher handed the Hawks another run and made it an 8-6 Roadrunners lead.

Shane Linnett took over in the sixth for the Hawks and allowed a leadoff walk. SUNY New Paltz found themselves with two runners on and no one out. A good eye loaded the bases on a walk. That would be all for Linett, as Liam Ryan took over in a jam. First batter Ryan faced was another walk which plated a run. A Sacrifice fly and a wild pitch drove home two more which made it 11-6 lead.

The last run for the Hawks came in the bottom of the eighth. Sophomore Nico Batkay pinch hit for Garrett Grantwhol and lined a single to right. A groundout to short by Ortiz moved Batkay to third. Kreider hit a sacrifice fly and cut the lead to 11-7.

A quiet ninth clinched the win for Ramapo, its second ever against SUNY New Paltz.

Wall was handed the loss after going two and two thirds innings and allowing six hits, eight runs, four of them earned, two walks with one strikeout.

The Hawks only collected five hits on Tuesday. Kreider went 2for3 with an RBI. Boccarossa went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Justin Harvey had a hit and two RBI. Batkay went 1-for-1 in his only plate appearance.

SUNY New Paltz returns home Wednesday against Manhattanville. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Loren Campbell Memorial Field.
