New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz opened up its 2024 campaign Friday on South Turf Field in the first annual Hawks Classic Tournament and off the boot of junior captain
Alex Wyant earned a 1-0 win over visiting RPI.
A balanced game throughout, the Hawks were able to take the lead in the 63rd minute with Wyant running onto a pass from graduate student
Brian Boylan that found the inside of the far corner for his first of the season.
SUNY New Paltz hung on from there, not giving up anything too dangerous on frame. Overall, the Engineers (0-1 overall) landed 10 shots on Hawks keeper
Christian Micheli who ended with six saves on the day. The senior did well commanding his box, cutting off several lofted balls served into the box, along with four corners from RPI — three of which came in the second half.
The Hawks totaled seven shots on the day with freshman
Ryan Zindler leading the team with two, both on frame. SUNY New Paltz's backline was solid, as their back four of
Samuel Snider,
Alberto Molina,
Owen McGarrity and
Ryan Bochenski, along with Wyant played the full 90 minutes.
SUNY New Paltz returns to South Turf Field to try and claim the Hawks Classic title, facing SUNY Poly at 2 p.m. The Wildcats defeated Sarah Lawrence in the late afternoon game Friday, 3-0.
