Madison, NJ — To kick off the Drew Fall Fest Tournament, the State University of New York New Paltz defeated the Stockton University Ospreys, 2-0 Saturday. The win elevated the Hawks' record to 2-0-1.
Hannah Wellinger got the game going within the first minute and fired a shot towards the Stockton net, but the attempt was saved by the Ospreys' keeper. In the second minute, Stockton got a chance to score, but
Maddie Franklin came up with the save.
Two minutes later, the Ospreys secured another scoring opportunity, but Franklin denied the goal. Not even 30 seconds later,
Emma Voege sent a ball from the corner into the box, which eventually connected with
Parris Burke for a shot, but she missed out wide.
In the 11th minute, the ball was back with the Ospreys in their offensive third, but their shot attempt was unsuccessful. Within the minute they tried again, this time with a headed ball, but could not get past Franklin.
Mia Baldinger got free late in the 14th minute, but her shot missed left of the net. Four minutes later,
Rachel Eisert had a shot on goal, but was denied by the goalie. However, Eisert did not back down. In the 24th minute she connected with a corner ball from Voege, and headed the ball into the Ospreys' net. Eisert's finish was the only goal of the half, and the buzzer sounded to end the period with SUNY New Paltz up 1-0.
"I thought we converted a critical set piece against a very tough defensive team," said Hawks coach
Mike Eckberg. "There were moments that we were sound at breaking lines [and] interchanging with our front lines very well. "
Eisert began the second with a shot on net but Stockton's keeper saved it and dished it out to the field, where the Osprey players took the ball downfield to try and net one, but were unsuccessful in the campaign.
In the 52nd minute,
Abby Dolge aimed to score, but the strike was deflected by the Stockton keeper. Eisert tried to finish the loose ball, but could not tap it in.
In the 70th minute, SUNY New Paltz received a golden opportunity when an Osprey player was flagged with a yellow card inside the box.
Gaby Treble stepped up to the mark for a penalty shot and fired it past Stockton into the back of the net. This goal was the second unanswered from Hawks for a 2-0 lead.
Both teams only attempted one shot a piece before the game finished, and SUNY New Paltz walked away victorious, having shut out the Ospreys in the 90 minutes.
Eisert and Treble finished with a goal each, Eisert with four total shots on net. Dolge had two on target attempts, with Treble, Burke and Wellinger also having one shot on goal each. Franklin finished with five saves.
"A back-to-back weekend takes its toll in many ways," Eckberg said. "So we are really going to rely on our depth."
The Hawks returns to Madison Sunday, facing off against the hosting Drew Rangers at 4 p.m.
