SUNY New Paltz Tennis Earns Fourth Straight SUNYAC Championship After Sweeping Cortland 4-0

Binghamton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz earned their fourth straight SUNYAC Championship Saturday afternoon against the Cortland Red Dragons. This is the first time in program history, and only the second group in SUNY New Paltz history to bring the trophy back to the nest four consecutive times.

"So happy to be able to celebrate New Paltz's first 4peat with this amazing team" says senior captain Justine Stanejko. "Everyone worked so hard and is so supportive of each other. Huge shoutout to Rob for putting us in this position and bringing us all together."

The Hawks cleaned up quite nicely with tournament recognition. Freshman Sam Ostrander won the Most Valuable Player of the tournament as well as both All-Tournament singles and doubles. Stanejko and Patrycja Filonik both were awarded with All-Tournament singles and doubles as well. Sydney Sladicka was awarded All-Tournament singles. Olivia Kunz, Nina Genzone and Angelica Gabriel were all awarded All-Tournament doubles.

"This season saw us break many records along the way, including going all season without dropping a set, defending our fourth sunyac championship in a row. This year's team dominated at all levels in both doubles and singles, and I could not be more proud as a coach to have seen the way we perform both on the court and off the court" said SUNY New Paltz coach Rob Bruley. "This championship now qualifies us to represent the SUNYAC conference at the NCAA championships in May. We now rest up until we get back on the courts in February to begin our spring non-conference season. A fantastic job was done all round."

Doubles: The Hawks earned all three matches today in the doubles category. Stanejko and Ostrander won their match 6-1. Nina Genzone and Angelica Gabriel swept their opponents earning their match 6-0. Patrycja Filonik and Olivia Kunz's match went unfinished due to major decision when the women were up 5-1.

Singles: The Hawks swept singles. Ostrander won second doubles with two 6-1 sets. Filonik won her first set without letting up a point 6-0 and won her second 6-1. Lula Brown-Vann won both of her sets 6-1, earning the match as well.

Stanejko's match went unfinished. She won her first set 6-2 and was winning her second set 4-1 when the match was called. Sydney Sladicka's match also fell to a major decision. Sladicka won the first set 6-2 and was up 3-0 when the match was called. Alex Krol played sixth singles for the Hawks and was winning 3-0 when her match was also called due to a major decision.

"So proud of this team for an amazing season and huge win to be the first tennis team at New Paltz to 4peat" says senior captain Genzone. "I am so grateful for Rob for pushing us so hard to be in the position we are today. We'll see you in the spring!"

With this win the Hawks have punched their ticket to the NCAA DIII National Championship in the spring. The Hawks will be back on the courts on Saturday March 28th at 1p.m. in Ithaca, NY to start their spring season!
