Canton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz went on the road Saturday and rolled to a 7-0 victory over Canton.
The victory improved the Hawks to 7-3-6 overall and 3-1-5 in the SUNYAC, helping them clinch the No. 5 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and a road matchup with No. 4 seeded Buffalo State, which they had tied 1-1 Oct. 18.
SUNY New Paltz had struggled offensively as of late but was propelled by three early goals against the Roos in a dominant outing. The Hawks kept the hosts without a single shot, while putting on 30 in the game with 17 on target.
Senior captain
Mia Baldinger capitalized with the game's first goal 10 minutes in, as she finished on an assist from fellow senior
Brooke Kelleher. Kelleher made sure to get in on the action 10 minutes later, scoring her fifth of the season. Junior forward
Grace Norelius subbed in for Kelleher in the 28th minute and made an immediate impact, as she scored off a pass from sophomore center back
Kara Jahrsdoerfer to push the score to 3-0 at the break.
SUNY New Paltz then officially put the game away within a three-minute span of the second half, scoring three consecutive goals. Baldinger started the run, putting away her second of the day in the 54th minute off an assist from senior forward
Addison Weiner. Almost immediately after the ensuing kickoff, Weiner then found Norelius for her second of the day with freshman forward
Samantha Gemmo subbing on two minutes later and scoring less than 30 seconds following the substitution to fatten the Hawks cushion to 6-0 and recording her first collegiate goal.
Gemmo capped the offensive night, as she recorded her second goal with senior captain midfielder
Laney Schmitz facilitating with the assist on the score.
Weiner led the team with six shots, four on goal, with a goal and an assist in 70 minutes off the bench. Baldinger followed with five shots, four on goal with two scores in 85 minutes of action. Kelleher added three shots, two on goal, with a goal and an assist in 44 minutes. Her 15 career assists thus far places her two shy of tying the all-time record alongside former teammate and 2024 alumna
Rachel Eisert, while her 55 points pushed her to fourth all-time.
Jess Centeri and
Madelyn Jachimiak split time in goal to register the combined shutout.
SUNY New Paltz secured its fifth straight appearance in the SUNYAC Tournament with its four-year seniors joining last year's four-year senior class as the only players in program history to make postseason in every year they competed. The five-year run is the most consecutive in program history as well.
The Hawks playoff run begins next Saturday, Nov. 1 against No. 4 seeded Buffalo State in the quarterfinal round. The winner will face No. 1 seeded Cortland in the semifinal round Wednesday, Nov. 5.
