New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz fell to the Oneonta Red Dragons in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals hosted on South Turf Field Saturday, 3-0.
SUNY New Paltz (10-4-4) could not overcome a 2-0 first half deficit against the Red Dragons (11-4-3) and despite rallying at the start of the second, the hosts could not net a goal to counter Oneonta's shutout.
The Hawks came out energized off the opening whistle and had their first opportunity in the second minute of play.
Owen Joyce crossed a pass to
Colin Brant in the center of the 18-yard box, where the forward stuck a low ball to the back left corner of the net. Unfortunately, the goal was taken back due to an offside call on Brant, and the score remained 0-0.
In the following five minutes, Joyce and
Ryan Zindler created solid opportunities, but Joyce's went wide while Zindler's was denied by Oneonta goalkeeper James Cintron. Cintron was the linchpin of the Red Dragons' defensive unit all game, and came up with seven saves on the day, just second to his season high of 11.
A foul committed by Joyce gave Oneonta its first prime opportunity on net, with the ball set just outside the Red Dragons' offensive third. The service landed in a cluster of players before bouncing out near the top of the box. Oneonta's Sam Rogers one-timed the loose ball past SUNY New Paltz's
Matt Katz and into the bottom right corner of net.
Six minutes later, Rogers scored again. After stripping the ball from the Hawks' backline, Joe Holder found Rogers by the opposite post and crossed a ball which Rogers chipped into the net, and Oneonta's lead was elevated to 2-0 in only the 21st minute.

SUNY New Paltz was only able to produce one more shot on frame in the first when
Bryan Lizama sent a free kick opportunity toward the net in the 44th minute, but Cintron made the save to keep the Hawks scoreless heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, SUNY New Paltz had a newfound energy and immediately had two shots on net, one from
Samuel Snider that ricocheted off the left post, followed up by
David Lamour, whose strike was smothered by Cintron in the 48th minute.
However, in the 59th minute, Oneonta would tack one more goal on the day. Rogers once again came up big for the Red Dragons and finished a fast break opportunity started by Luigi Prosperi, who dished a cross across the box. Rogers tapped the pass in for his and Oneonta's third goal of the match and to solidify a hat trick for the senior forward.
The third goal did not deflate the Hawks who worked for the next 30 minutes to respond to the mounting Red Dragons' lead. However, there were simply not enough offensive opportunities as they attempted four more on target shots in the time remaining. The clock expired with Oneonta moving on, victorious 3-0 over SUNY New Paltz.
The Hawks out-shot Oneonta 11-7 with Lizama, Zindler,
Alex Wyant,
Zack Beach,
David Lamour,
David Acker and
Kieran Weber all registering a shot on frame apiece. Katz played the entire match in net for SUNY New Paltz and earned two saves.
The Hawks conclude the 2025 season 10-4-4 overall and 5-2-2 in conference play. It was the last season the team will be playing in the SUNYAC, as SUNY New Paltz will become a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) ahead of the 2026 season.
