Brooklyn, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz earned its first win of the season Wednesday night, going on the road and rolling to a 91-51 victory over Brooklyn College.
The Hawks (1-1 overall) shot nearly 50 percent from the floor, including 37 percent from 3-point range going 11-for-30 from behind the arc. They scored 44 points in the paint with 17 second chance points as they out-rebounded the Bulldogs 60-35, including 20-9 on the offensive glass.
It took just four minutes for SUNY New Paltz to establish its first 10-point lead with
Mo Sylla running the floor for two off a steal from
LaMar Matthews on the other end. The Hawks never trailed the rest of the way as a 17-0 run down the stretch of the second half broke the game open. The stretch was buoyed by the 3-ball, as
Isaiah Rivera, Amira Hughes and
Trevor Amalfitano all hit from behind the arc to aid in the 20-point cushion.
The Hawks continued hitting from the perimeter, opening up the second half with treys from Amalfitano, Sylla and
Thomas Keane to quickly fatten their lead to 57-28 with less than three minutes into the half. SUNY New Paltz continued to roll, as
Justin Noelizaire knocked down from 3-point range to boost the difference to 39 with less than three minutes left before establishing a 40-points win with the final bucket by Noelizaire in the final minute to solidify the 91-51 score.
Sylla led all scorers with 24 points in 22 minutes, shooting an efficient 10-for-14 from the field with five rebounds and four assists. Rivera followed with hist first double-double of the season with 17 points and a team-leading 13 rebounds, making 6-for-12 from the floor and recording three assists and three blocks. Amalfitano registered 12 points with two boards, three assists, one block and one steal with Hughes adding 12 points in 14 minutes off the bench.
SUNY New Paltz is back on the road next Tuesday, Nov. 18 taking on Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut for a 7 p.m. game.
