New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz concluded a strong weekend slate in Elting Gym with a pair of three-set sweeps over Elmira and Elms Saturday.
Coming off a five-set victory over No. 11 Hobart Friday night in Elting, the Hawks worked back to .500 with two more wins Saturday, while also improving to 2-0 in the UVC with the victory over the Soaring Eagles.
SUNY New Paltz opened up the Saturday slate against Elmira, winning 25-20, 25-21, 25-18. The Hawks dominated, out-hitting the Eagles, .262-.072, while also posting more points (53-32), kills (36-26), aces (6-2), blocks (11-4), assists (35-25) and digs (30-26). The hosts were led by middles,
Peter Brutschin,
Krish Jain and
Geoff Ndoria who tallied six, five and four blocks, respectively, leading to a poor hitting performance by Elmira.
Opposite
Michael Spiegel was the catalyst offensively, as the sophomore tallied a game-high 11 kills on 24 attempts to hit a healthy, .375, while adding three blocks and five digs for a team-leading 12.5 points. Freshman outside
Nikko Tenedorio followed with eight kills on 14 attempts with an ace, two blocks and six digs. Ndoria and Jain had seven and six kills, respectively, with Jain tallying five digs and Ndoria two aces.
The Hawks were in control from the opening points of the first set against Elmira. Spiegel served through an early 4-0 run, capped by a double block by Brutschin and Tenedorio to give SUNY New Paltz a 9-4 lead. It never trailed for the rest of the set and held set point at 24-20, holding off the Eagles with a block, fittingly, putting an end to the first thanks to
Matt Marusza and Brutschin.

The Hawks were up 23-18 before a three-point run led to a timeout for SUNY New Paltz. Out of the stoppage,
Matt Teplansky laid down a kill of a set by Marusza to bring his team set point. Ndoria served the set-winning point with Jain and Tenedorio sealing he final point on a block.
The Hawks held a comfortable, 18-9 advantage in the third. Jain swung for a kill to push the game to match point at 24-17 with Tenedorio solidifying the iwn two points later on a kill.
SUNY New Paltz rolled to another sweep to end the day, defeating Elms 25-16, 25-15, 25-19. Teplansky was the catalyst in game two, registering a career-high 14 kills.
Carter Lotz also had one of his best games, tallying a game-high three aces with four blocks.
Daniel Shanley facilitated the offense, recording 36 assists. The Hawks dominated, hitting .507 with 43 kills and 10 aces.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, as it returns to the Hawk Center to face No. 4 Springfield at 6 p.m.
