SUNY New Paltz Softball Opens Up Season with Doubleheader Sweep of Rutgers-Camden

Hawks go on the road to earn two wins over Scarlet Raptors, 9-7 and 6-3

Camden, NJ — The State University of New York at New Paltz opened up its 2025 season Friday with a doubleheader sweep of hosting Rutgers-Camden, defeating the Scarlet Raiders 9-7 and 6-3, respectively.
 
The Hawks gave ace Sydney Waldon a 7-0 cushion to start game one with the senior doing the rest of the work, going five innings and allowing just four hits, two earned runs with four walks and three strikeouts to earn her first win of the season.
 
A hit-by-pitch kept the inning alive in the first, as Kelsey O'Brien took advantage by putting herself in scoring position with a steal. Emmie Mae Cabrera came through with an RBI base hit to plate O'Brien and push SUNY New Paltz to its first lead at 1-0. The visitors added on in the second, as an RBI base hit by Sophia D'Arcangelis scored Maddie Anderson who led off the inning with a walk. Jackie Rometo added on during the next at-bat, registering an RBI single to score Ella Sharrock on earned a bag following a throwing error. Lauren Serrao and O'Brien helped the Hawks to a 5-0 lead in consecutive at-bats.
 
Kate Hope grounded out in the third to score Mallory Rohon from third for an RBI. A throwing error on a grounder by D'Arcangelis scored another run, bringing the difference to 7-0.

The Devils added two in the fourth, but their biggest threat came in the sixth as the Hawks deployed their bench with the hefty lead. FDU-Florham took advantage scoring five in the inning to close the gap to two by inning's end. A game-saving play ended the frame, as Lindsey Serrao threw out FDU-Florham at the plate with Halle Sacharoff making the tag to close out the inning and keeping the Hawks' two-run cushion.
 
Waldon came back in to close the game, completing the game with a 1-2-3 inning.
 
Rometo, Cabrera and D'Arcangelis led the way in the game offensively, all going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI with Rometo adding a walk.
 
Alyssa Zangrilli earned the start in game two and snagged the win after pitching five innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs and two walks.
 
Once again, the Hawks got up early. Rometo gave her team the initial one-run advantage with an RBI base hit to score Ell Sharrock in the second. O'Brien then doubled to right in the fifth, scoring Lauren Serra from first who earned a free base on a lead-off walk. O'Brien eventually scored on a wild pitch to push the score to 3-0.
 
FDU-Florham tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, but SUNY New Paltz answered in the sixth, as Rometo brought in Leah Gunsett from third. Serrao laid down a sacrifice bunt to brigning D'arcangelis home with Rometo capping the inning, scoring on a wild pitch to bring SUNY New Paltz's lead to 6-3. Waldon was subbed back in to pitch the sixth and seventh. She closed the game, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts to clinch the win for her team, recording the save along the way.
 
O'Brien was the catalyst offensively, going 3-for-4 with one run and an RBI. Rometo followed, going 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
 
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday, going to Glassboro, NJ to face Rowan in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
