Delhi, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz put up 10 unanswered goals on the road against Delhi Wednesday night en route to its second victory of the year after capturing an eventual, 11-6 win over the Broncos.
SUNY New Paltz dominated through two-plus quarters, out-shooting Delhi, 33-19 to establish a 10-0 cushion. Freshman lefty attacker
Killian Yombor got the offense going, finishing off a feed from fellow freshman attacker
Finn Smith to score the first of the day with still six minutes remaining in the first period.
Anthony Senecal doubled-down for the Hawks, netting a man-up goal with about four minutes to go.
Ethan Scully ripped the initial shot on target that bounced off the goalie. Senecal was there for the heads-up play, scooping up the loose ball in front of cage and laying in the easy open-net goal.
Michael Plante, getting his third career start, scored on back-to-back possession thanks to dishes by Scully. Although the Broncos won the ensuing draw control,
Quinn Tucker forced the turnover which led to Plante's second straight to get the score at 4-0 entering the second quarter.
Following a save by
Zach Novak on a man-up opportunity for Delhi, the Hawks played out the penalty, cleared the ball and then scored on the opposite end, as Scully netted the first of his two goals on the day.
Coach
Dylan Neisler called a timeout following a turnover by the hosts with seven minutes left and out the break, the Hawks capitalized as
Finn Smith found the back of the net to push the lead to 6-0. Plante then added one more before the half.
SUNY New Paltz held firm after Delhi won the opening faceoff. The Hawks then capitalized on the other end after the defensive stop with Yombor scoring his second of the day. The bench then got up at 9-0 when freshman pole
Yasin Tabatabaee netted his first goal of his career.
The Broncos won the ensuing draw, but again SUNY New Paltz's defense stood its ground once again. After it cleared its defensive end, Scully registered another off a feed by Smith to bring the lead to 10-0. Delhi answered with its first to break the unanswered streak with five minutes left in the period. Senecal responded with a man-up goal to bring the difference back to 10.
The fourth was the tightest the game was, as the Broncos scored five unanswered and trimmed the difference, 11-6 with about 90 seconds left in the game. Neisler called his only timeout of the half to regroup his team, and they closed out the rest of the way to finalize the 11-6 outcome.
SUNY New Paltz had its cleanest game thus far, suffering just 12 turnovers with the Broncos totaling 28. The Hawks also improved in the middle of the field, successful on 18-for-21 in the clear, while the Broncos were 12-for-18. The hosts dominated on faceoffs though, 18-3, and picked up 43 ground balls to SUNY New Paltz's 28.
Scully led the team with four points, while adding three ground balls. Yombor, Plante and Smith followed with three points apiece. Tucker led the Hawks defensively, totaling a career-high five caused turnovers to go along with four ground balls.
SUNY New Paltz is back home Saturday, hosting Misericordia at 1 p.m. on North Turf Field.
