Williamsport, PA – The State University of New York at New Paltz Baseball program split the day with Lycoming College again on Sunday. The Hawks (6-6) won game one 11-3 but fell 17-13 in game two against the Warriors (9-6).
Game One: Johnny McHugh started on the mound for the Hawks pitching four innings. McHugh earned his first win of the season after striking out two batters, letting up five hits, one run, one walk and one error across the 16 batters faced.
Lycoming struck first in the bottom of the first with one run. SUNY New Paltz answered back in the top of the second scoring three runs.
Joe Richetti led off with a double down the right foul line.
Fabian Apicella singled through the left side of the field and Richetti advanced to third.
Garrett Grathwohl bunted and reached first on a fielder's choice. The Warriors' catcher tagged Richetti out at home and Apicella advanced to second.
Alex Ouellette doubled down the left field foul line, batting in both Apicella and Grathwohl.
Matt Sarni flied out to left field and
Anthony Pericolosi was hit by a pitch.
Tommy Kreider doubled to right center batting in Ouellette. Pericolosi and Kreider were left on base after
Dillon Ristano flied out to right field.
The Hawks defense was quick to shut down the Warriors in the bottom of the second with two back-to-back putouts to Oullette in left field and a ground out to Sarni at shortstop.
Wallace Kirkpatrick flied out to left field and Richetti singled up the middle in the top of the third. Apicella singled up the middle and Richetti advanced to second. Grathwohl reached on a fielder's choice and Apicella was tagged out at second. Richetti and Grathwohl were left on base after a fly out to center field ended the inning.
SUNY New Paltz scored three more runs in the top of the fourth, extending the lead. Sarni landed on first after being hit by a pitch. Pericolosi singled down the third base line with a bunt and Sarni advanced to second. Kreider hit a home run, batting in both men, and putting the Hawks up by five runs. Ristano singled to center field and Kirkpatrick grounded into a double play. Richetti singled to the shortstop and stole second. He advanced to third on a passed ball but was left on base.
SUNY New Paltz kept the ball rolling in the top of the fifth with three more runs. Grathwohl singled to left field and Oullette struck out. Sarni reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Grathwohl out at second. Pericolosi was hit by a pitch and Sarni advanced to second. Kreider singled to center field batting in Sarni and helping Pericolosi advance to second. Ristano doubled to right center batting in both Pericolosi and Kreider but was left on base.
Danny DiEdwards came in to pitch for McHugh in the bottom of the fifth. DiEdwards pitched two innings, striking out two batters, letting up four walks, two runs, two walks and two errors across the 13 batters faced.
The men kept adding to the board in the top of the sixth. Richetti walked and Apicella Singled to center field. Grathwohl flew out to second base. Ouellette walked and both Apicella and Richetti advanced. Sarni reached on a fielder's choice to third base and Ouellette was tagged out at second. Richetti scored and Apicella advanced to third and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. Percolosi advanced on a fielder's choice and was left on base as Sarni was tagged out at second. The Hawks led the Warriors 11-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
Lycoming scored one run in the bottom of the sixth and one in the bottom of the seventh for a final score of 11-3.
Frankie Collora finished the game on the mound relieving DiEdwards in the bottom of the seventh. Collora pitched one inning and struck out two batters, letting up not hits or runs.
Game Two: Sarni started on the mound pitching 4.1 innings. He struck out three batters, let up 11 hits, eight runs, seven errors and one walk across the 27 batters faced.
Percolosi led off the second game for the Hawks but struck out. Krieder reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop. Ristano doubled to right center bringing home Kreider unearned. Ristano advanced to third on a wild pitch and
Robert Gregory walked. Both men advanced on a balk. Richetti flied out to right field and Gregory advanced on the play. Apicella singled through the left side batting Gregory home, also unearned. SUNY New Paltz led the Warriors 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first.
Grathwohl led off in the second but struck out. Ouellette reached first on a fielding error and advanced to second on an error. Percicolosi struck out swinging and Krieder singled to first base. With Oullette on third, Ristano walked moving Kreider to second, loading the bases. Gregory was walked and Oullette scored the fourth run of the game, unearned. The rest of the men were left on base.
SUNY New Paltz had another great inning in the top of the third. Apicella started the inning with a ground out and Mackle flied out to the short stop. Grathwohl singled to the shortstop and got the ball rolling for the Hawks. Ouellette singled to left field and Pericolosi walked, loading the bases. Kreider singled down the right field line, sending Grathwohl and Ouellette over home plate. Kreider stole second and Pericolosi scored the seventh run of the game, unearned on a throwing error. Kreider was left on second at the end of the inning.
Lycoming scored their first two runs in the bottom of the third. The Hawks scored another run extending the lead in the top of the fourth. Gregory was hit by a pitch and Richetti singled up the middle. Apicella singled to right field all the men advanced. Mackle grounded into a double play that tagged out Apicella as well, but Gregory scored SUNY New Paltz's eighth run.
The Warriors started to chip away at the Hawks lead scoring one run in the bottom of the fourth. Lycoming scored four runs before the
Dylan Hayes came in to release Sarni. Hayes pitched 0.2 of an inning and dropped his record to 1-1 taking the loss. Hayes let up one hit two runs, two errors and two walks across the five batters faced. The Warriors scored one more run before the turn of the inning tying the game at 8-8.
Lycoming scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth turning the tide of the game.
Ryan Knieriemen came in to pitch for SUNY New Paltz. He pitched one inning striking out one batter and letting up one hit.
Richetti singled in the top of the seventh but was tagged out when Apicella grounded into a double play. Mackle grounded out to second the end the inning.
Austin Barrett started on the mound in the bottom of the seventh. Barrett struck out one batter, let up three hits, four runs, four errors and two walks. The Hawks went into the top of the eight down 14-8.
Grathwohl grounded out to the third basemen followed by a single to right field from Ouellette. Pericolosi singled up the middle and Ouellette advanced to second. Kreider singled to the right, batting in Ouellette and moving Pericolosi to second. Ristano struck out at home and
Ryan Muskopf pinch hit for Gregory. Muskopf doubled to left field batting in both Pericolosi and Kreider. Richetti singled to the catcher and Muskopf advanced to third then scored on a throwing error. Richetti stole second but was left on base.
Jason Wall finished on the mound for the Hawks pitching one inning. Wall let up three hits, three runs, one walk and two errors in the bottom of the eighth.
SUNY New Paltz scored one more run in the top of the ninth, but it was not enough to pull ahead and regain the lead.
Nico Batkay pinch hit for Mackle and flied out to left field. McHugh pinch hit for Grathwohl but struck out looking. Ouellette singled to center field, followed by another single from Pericolosi. Kreider singled to right field and Ouellette scored. Ristano struck out and two were left on base at the end of the game.
SUNY New Paltz will head to Morristown, New Jersey to play Saint Elizabeth University on Tuesday at 3.p.m.
