Morristown, NJ — The State University of New York New Paltz earned a 12-1 road win over Saint Elizabeth University Tuesday to improve to 7-6 on the season.
Xavier Zykoff started on the mound for the Hawks and played four innings, allowed just two hits and one earned run with two walks and two strikeouts.
Robert Gregory came in pitch in the top of the third and earned his first win of the season. Gregory struck out one batter, allowing only two hits, one walk and one run across the 10 batters faced.
Tyler Lopez came in to pitch the final three innings, allowing just two hits and tallied five K's as he secured his first career save.
The Hawks struck first in a five-run inning to open up the game.
Anthony Pericolosi started the rally with a lead off single and SUNY New Paltz quickly loaded the bases on a walk and a single before
Fabian Apicella ripped a two RBI base hit up the middle to give his team a 2-0 lead.
Joe Richetti loaded the bases back up on a single to left forcing the Eagles into a pitching change.
St. Elizabeth earned its first out on a fielder's choice force at home, but brought home a run for the Hawks with an RBI walk to
Ty Gallagher. The runs then continued to come across as
Ryan Mackle and
Matt Sarni each brought runners home on base by balls to bring the lead to 5-0.
Dillon Ristano added two more to SUNY New Paltz's total in the fifth, striking a two-RBI single to left that scored Sarni and Mackle from second and third, respectively. Apicella stepped into the batter's box on the ensuing at-bat and registered an RBI base hit, scoring
Tommy Kreider from third, pushing the Hawks ahead, 8-1 by inning's end.
SUNY New Paltz capped its offense in the sixth, plating four more insurance runs, thanks to three consecutive walks by the Eagles. Kreider, Ristano and Apciella all picked up RBIs to help the Hawks to a 11-1 advantage. Kreider then got the lead to 12-1, scoring on a wild pitch.
Apicella went 2-for-3 with one run, four RBI, two walks and a stolen base. Ristano finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Mackle registered 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and two walks.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Wednesday, going on the road to play Purchase at 3 p.m.
