Williamsport, PA – The State University of New York at New Paltz split its first doubleheader slate Saturday with Lycoming College. The Hawks (5-5) won game one, 4-3 but fell 6-4 in game two against the Warriors (8-6).
Game One: Michael Weed started on the mound for the Hawks pitching 4.2 innings. Weed struck out three batters, let up two runs, eight hits, two errors and one walk.
SUNY New Paltz struck first, scoring three runs in the top of the third.
Ty Gallagher started the inning and walked.
Fabian Apicella was tagged out on a sacrifice bunt, moving Gallagher to second. Gallagher was picked off by the catcher to the second basemen.
Matt Sarni singled to short and
Anthony Pericolosi singled up the middle. With runners on first and second,
Tommy Kreider doubled down the right field line, sending Sarni across home plate for the first run of the game.
Michael Ascanio singled to right center batting in both Pericolosi and Kreider for runs two and three but was left on base.
The Hawks scored their fourth and final run to close the game in the top of the fourth.
Wallace Kirkpatrick flew out to right field and
Joe Richetti walked. Gallagher struck out and Richetti stole second. Apicella singled up the middle bringing home Richetti for the Hawks fourth run.
Lycoming scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Pericolosi led off the fifth inning with a single to center field, He then stole second but was left on base.
The Warriors earned three hits in the bottom of the fifth but could not upset the Hawks defense and did not score.
Ryan Knieriemen came in to relieve Weed. Lycoming earned two more hits in the bottom of the sixth but still could not score. The Warriors scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but SUNY New Paltz shut them down, keeping the 4-3 lead in the final inning.
Knieriemen finished the game on the mound earning the save. He pitched 2.1 innings, struck out one batter, let up five hits, one run and one error. Weed earned his second collegiate win for the Hawks.
Game Two: Kiran Paingankar started game two on the mound for SUNY New Paltz pitching six innings, while striking out five batters and letting up three hits, one run, one walk and one error across the 24 batters faced.
Dillion Ristano led off the top of the second with a single through the left side of the field getting on base. Kirkpatrick flew out to center field. Richetti reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Ristano out. Richetti was left on base.
Garrett Grathwohl singled to left field to lead off in the top of the third. Sarni reached on a fielder's choice and Garthwohl was tagged out. Sarni was caught stealing and Pericolosi singled up the middle. Kreider reached first on a fielder's choice that tagged out Pericolosi and left him on base.
Ristano doubled in the top of the fourth down the left field foul line but was left on third base at the end of the inning.
Apicella flew out to left field. Grathwohl scored the first run of the game with a left field home run. Sarni singled to right field but was tagged out when Pericolosi grounded into a double play. Lycoming scored their first run in the bottom of the fifth.
Kreider led the top of the sixth inning off with a single to right field. Ascanio walked and Kreider advanced to second. Ristano singled through the left side and both men advanced.
Ryan Muskopf pinch hit for Kirkpatrick and struck out. Richetti doubled to left field batting in both Kreider and Ascanio. Apicella reached on a fielder's choice that tagged Ristano out at home plate. Garthwohl walked and Apicella advanced to second. Sarni lined out to the shortstop. The Hawks left three on base and led the Warriors 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth.
After a pitching change on the Warriors side, Pericolosi singled to the right side and advanced to second on a passed ball. Kreider flew out to center field, but Pericolosi advanced to third and was left on base after two teammates were struck out at home plate.
Connor Catania came in to start the seventh. Catania let up two hits, four runs, four errors and two walks before
Scott Scheppy came in to relieve him. Scheppy pitched 0.1 inning, letting up one run, three hits, one error and one walk. After the bottom of the seventh the Hawks trailed 6-3.
Ryan Mackle pinch hit for Muskopf in the top of the eighth and started the inning with a single to right center. Richetti struck out swinging and Apicella walked. With men on first and second Grathwohl singled to right field, loading the bases. Sarni singled through the left side batting in Mackle for the fourth and final run of the game for the Hawks. Three runners were left on base.
Jeff Lundstedt came in to relieve Scheppy, as the junior pitched the ninth and final inning on the mound and earned three clean outs.
Ascanio singled to right field in the top of the ninth and Ristano singled to left field but were both left on base as SUNY New Paltz fell 6-3.
The Hawks will stay in Lycoming for one last doubleheader of the series Sunday starting at 9 a.m.
