Clermont, FL — The State University of New York New Paltz split its two-game slate on day two of the PFX Spring Games in Clermont, Florida Sunday.
The Hawks fell to Simpson College, 11-2 in five innings but rallied in the second outing of the day to earn a 4-2 victory over Clarkson, registering their first win of their 10-game slate of the tournament while bumping their overall record to 3-5 overall.
SUNY New Paltz struggled offensively against the Storm, registering four hits over five innings played.
Jackie Rometo was two of those base hits, while
Kelsey O'Brien added one on an RBI double with
Mallory Rohon also recording a base hit in the game.
Simpson took a 1-0 lead after the first but added three more in the third in a two-run rally that resulted in three-straight RBI hits including two doubles. Eventually, starter
Sydney Waldon got out of the inning following a pop-out.
SUNY New Paltz answered in the bottom half thanks a flyout by
Lauren Serrao, which scored
Maddie Anderson who landed on third following a fielding error at second. However, the Storm opened up the game with four runs in the fourth, taking an 8-1 lead and added on with three more in third. O'Brien's RBI double, which scored Rometo from second, was the only offense the Hawks managed in the bottom half, resulting in a run-ruled five-inning result.
Waldon suffered the loss, dropping her record to 1-3 overall. She allowed nine hits, seven runs and a walk with seven strikeouts on 19 batters faced in three innings of work.
SUNY New Paltz had a better result against the Golden Knights, as Rometo started the game with a lead off double and was eventually brought home on a sacrifice fly by O'Brien. The Hawks added a run to their lead in the third, as O'Brien started the frame with an RBI double and was advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. She was eventually brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Leah Gunsett to bring their lead to 2-0.
Clarkson tied the game in the bottom half of the third though, scoring two runs on RBI base hits. Gunsett got out of the inning though with a strikeout to strand two runners on and keep the game at a stalemate.
Neither team answered until the Hawks led off the seventh. Anderson was hit by a pitch to earn a free base and was brought home on a go-ahead triple by
Sophia D'Arcangelis that ended as the game-winning hit. Rometo helped D'Arcangelis home for an insurance run a batter later and that was all SUNY New Paltz needed to solidify the win. Waldon closed out the side pitching the last two innings and earning the win. She gave up just a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in the stretch.
O'Brien was the catalyst, going 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Rometo followed with a run and an RBI, both registering extra base hits and a stolen base.
Ella Sharrock also added a hit on the day, along with D'Arcangelis who finished 1-for-2 with her RBI triple and a run scored.
SUNY New Paltz has the day off Monday before playing two games Tuesday, facing University of Southern Maine at 9 a.m. and Wellesley College at 11:15 a.m.
