Clermont, FL — The State University of New York New Paltz lost both games Tuesday morning on day three of competition at the PFX Spring Games falling to University of Southern Maine, 4-1 and Wellesley College, 4-2.
Sydney Waldon earned the start and pitched a full six innings, allowing just five hits and four earned runs with seven walks and eight strikeouts on 30 batters faced.
SUNY New Paltz struggled mustering scoring chances, totaling just two hits in the game. It faced a four-run deficit entering the seventh and got on following a dropped third strike during a pinch-hit at-bat by sophomore
Kate Hope. She washed pushed into scoring position following an error at second on a ball hit by Sophia D'Arcagenlis on the next play and was later brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Lauren Serrao. However, the offense sputtered there as a line out concluded the game.
Emmie Mae Cabrera and Serrao were the only two with hits in the game, both finishing 1-for-2 with Cabrera adding a walk and Serrao an RBI.
SUNY New Paltz's offense started coming alive in game two against Wellesley, but the Hawks had trouble putting runners across as they left a total of 11 runners on.
They faced a four-run deficit heading into the bottom of the fifth but scored their first run of the game in the inning. D'Arcangelis led off with a single and was followed by a
Jackie Rometo base hit with both she and D'Arcangelis advancing into scoring position and second and third. The Blue managed to get an out in the jam, forcing an out at home plate on an attempted sac bunt by Serrao. They then got the second out with a swinging strikeout before Cabrera knocked an RBI base hit down the left side to plate Serrao who got on safely following the fielder's choice. A ground out on the following at-bat ended the inning with the Hawks facing a 4-1 deficit.
They kept the rally alive though, holding Wellesely's offense the rest of the way.
Kelsey O'Brien gave her team life with a lead-off triple to start the bottom of the seventh. Sharrock then brought her home two batters later, ripping another triple to close the gap, 4-2. However, a fly out and a strikeout ended the comeback hopes with the score solidifying at 4-2.
O'Brien and Sharrock each went 2-for-4 in the game, adding a run and RBI, respectively. Rometo followed with a hit and run scored, while Cabrera finished with a hit and an RBI.
Leah Gunsett earned the start and pitched through six innings, allowing 12 hits, four earned runs with two talks and five strikeouts on 32 batters faced. Waldon came in for relief in the sixth and tossed a clean inning adding one strikeout.
SUNY New Paltz continues its 10-game slate at the PFX Spring Games Wednesday, facing Babson and Springfield at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. respectively.
