Saratoga Springs, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz went on the road to face Skidmore College Monday at Wachenheim Field.
The game, previously rescheduled from Feb. 12, saw the Hawks look at 10-goal hole after they cut the deficit early at 3-1. The Thoroughbreds then scored eight unanswered en route to an eventual 18-5 win.
Skidmore (5-4 overall) out-shot SUNY New Paltz, 61-41, including 35-22 in shots on goal. The hosts also picked up more ground balls, 39-28 with the Hawks winning at the faceoff X, 13-12.
Anthony Senecal netted the first goal for SUNY New Paltz, taking advantage of a late slide back from
James Flanagan, as Flanagan fed Senecal for a right-handed rip and scored his team-leading 20th of the season to cut the score 3-1 with more than 10 minutes to play in the first quarter.
The Thoroughbreds responded after a defensive stop, as
Quinn Tucker won the ensuing faceoff thanks to a ground ball off the wing by
Noah Reed. However, a blocked shot by
Michael Plante on the offensive set quickly went the other direction leading Skidmore on the break with a transition goal. The hosts then won the ensuing draw and immediately scored, and it continued to pile on as the floodgates began to open. The Thoroughbreds ended the quarter with two more goals in the final 90 seconds to push their lead to 8-1 entering the second.
Skidmore scored three to start the following period until
Blake Lyons broke up the unanswered stretch with a goal on an assist by Senecal with 2:40 to play. The score remained at 11-2 entering halftime and the Hawks took some momentum into the break with Skidmore hit with a penalty.
Ethan Scully took advantage, as he scored on the man-up to start the third quarter. SUNY New Paltz then added another following a caused turnover by Reed, leading to another Lyons goal.
Neither team found the back of the net for the following five-plus minutes until the Thoroughbreds scored on an extended offensive set, as the Hawks struggled to close out with a ground ball pickup. They added one last goal of the period in the final second, taking advantage of a failed clear attempt to push the lead to 13-4 entering the fourth.
Plante cut the score to 13-5 to start the final 15 minutes, finishing on a dish by
Nick Darcangelo but the offense stalled there for SUNY New Paltz. Skidmore added five in the last 13 minutes to solidify the 18-5 rout.
Lyons and Senecal led the Hawks with two points apiece, while both adding two ground balls. Plante, Tucker and Reed each had a team-high four ground balls, while goalies
Zach Novak and
Eric Waldron split time in goal and totaled six and 11 saves, respectively, with Waldron tallying a career-high in the outing.
SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday, as it resumes SUNYAC play going on the road to face SUNY Morrisville at 1 p.m.
