SUNY New Paltz Softball Walks Off Against Plattsburgh to take Series Sweep

Hawks walk off in both games to win 1-0 and 3-2 over Cardinals

New Paltz, NY — It was a walk off Friday afternoon for the Hawks.

The State University of New York New Paltz won in walk-off fashion, first in the bottom of the ninth and then in the bottom of the seventh to earn a doubleheader series sweep of visiting Plattsburgh Friday on Mary Gray Deane Field.

The Hawks won Game 1, 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a game-winning hit up the middle by Sophia D'Arcangelis before earning a come-from-behind, 3-2 Game 2 victory off the bat of Alyssa Zangrilli in the bottom of the seventh.

SUNY New Paltz improved to .500 with the two victories at 13-13 overall, while staying unbeaten in SUNYAC play at 6-0, going 4-0 in the two-day slate against the Cardinals Friday and the Potsdam Bears Thursday.

The offense was scarce in Game 1, as both teams went scoreless until the Hawks won the game with a run in the ninth. Sydney Waldon pitched a gem, giving up just one hit and three walks with 10 strikeouts in a nine-inning complete game shutout.

SUNY New Paltz mustered eight hits, including a one-out double in the second by Leah Gunsett. Emmie Mae Cabrera tacked on another with a one-out single, as Lindsey Serrao, who pinch-ran for Gunsett advanced to third, but the offense was halted there as the Cardinals forced a pop-up to end the side.

Mallory Rohon led off the fourth with a base hit, but Plattsburgh forced three-straight outs to close out the side unscathed. The Hawks threatened again in the seventh, as Maddie Anderson led off with a base hit before being moved over into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Cabrera. SUNY New Paltz was again shutout however, as a pop up to third and a strikeout ended the side.

Rohon doubled to start the ninth, getting the rally started. Gunsett followed, lining a ball to shallow left and advancing Rohon to third. After two strikeouts left SUNY New Paltz to its last out of the inning, D'Arcangelis came through with a rip through the gut of the infield to easily score Rohon from third and snatch a 1-0 win for the Hawks.
Lauren Serrao

Rohon was the catalyst in the win, going 3-for-4 including the game-winning run. Gunsett finished 2-for-4 while Anderson, Cabrera and D'Arcangelis recorded the only other hits in the game.

SUNY New Paltz needed a rally in Game 2, as it looked at a 2-0 deficit after five innings played. After a scoreless sixth, Gunsett opened the bottom of the seventh with a rip down the third base side to get the comeback started. D'Arcangelis kept the inning alive, as she hit a hard grounder back at the pitcher and hustled down the line with Kate Hope, running for Gunsett, advancing to third on the play with two outs. Lauren Serrao loaded the bases as she blooped a single to shallow right setting the table for Jackie Rometo, as SUNY New Paltz got back to the top of the order.

Rometo ripped a first-pitch single to right and scored Hope to get her team within one with one out. Kelsey O'Brien then added on, as she snuck an RBI base hit through the left side, plating D'Arcangelis to tie the game. Zangrilli then completed the rally, as she, like D'Arcangelis in Game 1, found the gap through the middle infield, scoring Serrao and pushing the Hawks to a 3-2 come-from-behind win.

Gunsett earned the victory on the mound, allowing six hits, two earned runs and just one walk with seven strikeouts in the complete game win, improving her record to 6-5 on the year.

Rometo and O'Brien each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Zangrilli hit 1-for-2 with the game-winning RBI. Gunsett finished 2-for-3, while D'Arcangelis and Serrao each went 2-for-3 with a run scored.

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Monday and Tuesday, going on the road to face Oswego and Canton, respectively.
