Canton, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz remained undefeated in SUNYAC play after going on the road and shutting out Canton for a doubleheader sweep, winning 4-0 in Game 1 and 12-0 in five innings in Game 2.
The outing was highlighted by the Hawks' top two arms, as senior
Sydney Waldon broke her own single-game strikeout record, recording 17 in the seven-inning win in Game 1, while freshman
Leah Gunsett threw a no-hitter without yielding a single, hit, run or walk with eight strikeouts through a 12-0 rout of Canton. She becomes the second Hawk to throw a perfect game, as alumna Lindsey Roman became the first back in 2023 in a complete seven innings pitched against Brockport.
SUNY New Paltz improved to 15-13 overall and 8-0 in the SUNYAC after rolling the Roos Tuesday. Through the two-game series, the Hawks gave up just one hit and four base runners across 12 innings played, out-hitting Canton 23-1 with Waldon and Gunsett combining for 25 strikeouts of the 36 outs recorded.
Sophia D'Arcangelis helped SUNY New Paltz to its first run of the day in the second inning of Game 1, as her single through the right side of the infield helped
Maddie Anderson across who earned a free bag following an error at first. The Hawks added a run in the fifth, started with a one-out base hit from
Kelsey O'Brien. She stole second to place herself in scoring position and advanced following a wild throw on the ensuing at-bat.
Ella Sharrock plated O'Brien on a ground out to double the lead, as SUNY New Paltz added two more insurance runs in the seventh.
Lindsey Serrao started the inning with a lead off pinch hit and
Jackie Rometo then added two quick runs to the scoreboard off one swing as she rifled a ball over the left field fence for her first home run of the season.
The offense came alive in Game 2, as four different Hawks had a multi-hit game, led by O'Brien who went 4-for-4 with three runs and four RBI with two home runs and a stolen base.
O'Brien opened up the game with a solo home run in her first at bat in the first inning. SUNY New Paltz added three more in the second, as its first three batters reached safely with Lauren Parate bringing the score to 2-0 as she crossed home plate following a sacrifice fly out by Rometo. O'Brien then added two more runs on a hard-hit grounder through the left side, scoring
Lauren Serrao and D'Arcanglis.
The Hawks broke the game open with a six-run third inning.
Lauren Serrao knocked a two RBI double to plate
Lindsey Serrao and Parete. Rometo helped add another run on an RBI single to shallow right with D'Arcangelis scoring from third. Rometo was eventually brought home as well on an RBI single by Sharrock to cap the inning and push SUNY New Paltz's lead to 10-0.
O'Brien homered again to lead off the fifth, followed by a solo home run by
Mallory Rohon to cement the 12-0 outcome.
Parete followed O'Brien offensively, going 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk. Rohon finished 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Sharrock hit 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Lauren Serrao had a double with two runs scored and two RBI.
SUNY New Paltz continues with SUNYAC play Wednesday, going to Oswego to take on the Lakers for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
