Oswego, NY — It was an eventful two game series Wednesday between the State University of New York New Paltz and hosting SUNY Oswego.
Sydney Waldon was the star in Game 1, as she threw a no-hitter to lead her team to a 4-0 win, while
Ella Sharrock was the Game 2 hero, as her eighth inning triple pushed SUNY New Paltz to a 2-1 extra innings victory.
Waldon, fresh off re-setting the single game strikeout record Tuesday against Canton, stayed hot Wednesday against the Lakers. She tossed 12 strikeouts and yielded just three walks on 26 batters faced in a complete, seven innings pitched.
Sophia D'Arcangelis helped the Hawks to a 1-0 lead in the second, knocking a sacrifice fly to left and plating
Lindsey Serrao who pinch-ran for
Leah Gunsett after she opened the inning with a lead-off single. Sharrock rocked a solo shot in the third to add an insurance run with
Lauren Serrao hitting a sacrifice fly in the sixth to score
Maddie Anderson in the sixth.
Mallory Rohon homered in the eighth to cap the scoring for the Hawks.
Sharrock was the catalyst, as the sophomore went 2-for-4 with one run and an RBI. Anderson went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while D'Arcangelis finished 2-for-2 with an RBI.
Gunsett who also etched her name in the history books Tuesday after throwing a five-inning no-hitter while being an error away from a perfect game, earned the Game 2 start Wednesday. Gunsett tossed seven innings, allowed four hits one earned run and two walks with seven strikeouts.
After the Lakers took the initial lead in the bottom of the first, SUNY New Paltz tied the game at 1-1 in the third thanks to a solo home run by Sharrock. Neither team could push a run across for the next four innings, forcing an extra eighth.
Kelsey O'Brien led off with a base hit for the Hawks and Sharrock did the rest, as she rifled a triple to easily score O'Brien to push across the go-ahead run. Waldon came in to pitch the bottom half and continued to be lights out. She forced a ground out in the first at-bat before getting the batter swinging for two outs. She let up three straight base runners but left them stranded as she struck out the final batter to secure her team a 2-1 win.
Sharrock's hot bat continued, as she led the way going 2-for-4 with one run and two RBI. O'Brien followed, going 2-for-3 with one run.
SUNY New Paltz improved to 17-13 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the SUNYAC following the series sweep. It resumes conference play this weekend, as the Hawks return home to host SUNY Morrisville and Cortland for back-to-back doubleheaders series Friday and Saturday, respectively.
