New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York New Paltz won its third straight on Mary Gray Deane Field following a doubleheader sweep of Skidmore College Wednesday.
The Hawks improved to 6-12 overall after winning game one, 6-0 and game two, 7-1 over the Thoroughbreds who dropped to 4-12 overall.
Sydney Waldon pitched the full seven innings for SUNY New Paltz and improved to 3-6 overall following the win in game one, allowing just three hits, two walks while matching a season-high eight strikeouts in the complete game shutout.
Jackie Rometo led the team offensively, going 2-for-3 with one run, an RBI, a walk and three stolen bases.
Maddie Anderson followed, also going 2-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.
Kelsey O'Brien added an RBI and a stolen base, while
Lauren Serrao added a double with a run and two RBI.
Ella Sharrock also knocked a double and a run scored.
The Hawks took the lead in the third inning after getting the lead-off batter on. Anderson helped place two runners on with a one-out single and Serrao did the rest, registering a two RBI double to score Anderson and
Kate Hope from third to give her team the initial, 2-0 lead. Rometo plated Serrao on an RBI single following an errant throw, allowing Serrao at third during her at-bat.
The score remained until the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a one-out double by Sharrock to ignite the offense.
Mallory Rohon followed with a base hit with
Lindsey Serrao coming in to pinch run. A wild pitch advanced both runners before
Emmie Mae Cabrera loaded the bases on a walk. Michaela Bridgewood helped move a run across on a fielder's choice, before
Sophia D'Arcangelis scored another run a batter later to push the lead to 5-0 by the end of the inning.

SUNY New Paltz added a run in the sixth after Rometo led off with a base hit. She quickly got herself in scoring position with a stolen base and O'Brien brought her home on an RBI single to help solidify the 6-0 victory.
Skidmore took a 1-0 lead to start game two, but the Hawks tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second before taking the lead in the fourth.
Leah Gunsett led off the inning with a double and Anderson followed up with another double to bring Gunsett across and give SUNY New Paltz a 2-1 lead. Anderson then stole third helping
Lauren Serrao easily bring her home on a sacrifice fly. O'Brien got on with a base hit but stole second and then third to get herself into scoring position and was brought home on an RBI base hit by Sharrock on the very next at-bat, bringing the advantage to 4-1.
The Hawks opened up the game in the bottom of the fifth with three more runs, all stemmed by one swing from O'Brien. The bases were loaded following back-to-back two-out hits by
Lauren Serrao and Rometo, as Gunsett got on two batters prior on a one-out base knock. O'Brien brought them all home on a three RBI double and pushed the lead to a comfortable, 7-1 advantage.
Morgan Smith closed out the final two innings, allowing just two hits with three strikeouts on eight batters faced. Gunsett was given the win and improved to 2-5 on the year after coming in to relieve starter
Alyssa Zangrilli. Gunsett threw 3.2 innings and allowed just two walks, no runs with seven strikeouts on 16 batters faced.
Rometo and O'Brien led the way at the top of the lineup, combing to go 4-for-8 with two runs, three RBI and three stolen bases in the outing. Gunsett went 3-for-3 with two runs to help her own cause while Anderson finished 2-for-3 with one run and an RBI.
SUNY New Paltz hit the road for a six-game hiatus from Mary Gray Deane Field as it begins SUNYAC play. The Hawks begin this weekend with a doubleheader series against Oswego Friday before facing Canton for a two-game slate Saturday.
